Excerpt from "The Last Voyage of the Dan-D"

“What makes you different from the other men who sail boats?”
“Well for one thing, my looks.”
“Your looks?”
“Yep. You’ve got to have the look of a gallant seafaring man, like this.” Captain Dan stood up straight, stuck his chest out and put his hand over his eyes to shade them from the sun and acted like he had a far away look. He looked a little ridiculous in the pose, being so old, wearing that ugly hat and standing on that run down old boat.
Alex barely concealed a laugh, “You don’t look all that gallant today, Captain. Maybe you looked gallant when you were younger and your boat was in better shape.”
“Ain’t nothing wrong with my boat that a properly working compass can’t fix.”
He paused and eyed Alex, “You’re a smart aleck little whippersnapper if I do say so. Does your grandpa know that you talk to saintly old men like this? I am the epitome of a perfect sea faring man.”
“I bet so,” Alex laughed.
“I am. I’ve got all it takes. Seafaring man wannabes strive to achieve the excellence that just comes naturally to me. Why, I even have a wooden leg, Alex.”
“A wooden leg?”
“I have a wooden leg,” the Captain said proudly. “All real seafaring men have one.”
“But, Captain, you have two perfectly good legs. You don’t need a wooden leg.”
“Alex, every true seafaring man has to have a wooden leg like my hero Long John Silver.”
