Tip jet for Fairey Rotodyne?

We have a winner!
Yes it is a tipjet of the Fairey Rotodyne: It used the tip jets for spinnning the rotor during start or landing vertically, and they were switched off during normal flight, the rotor being used as an autogiro while two powerful turboprop engines provided thrust during flying. There were three pipes feeding air and fuel into the jets through the rotor blades, igniting the mixture within the tips provided thrust through the nozzles during vertical take-off and landing; it was not needed and shut off during flight. The Rotodyne was a very reliable and successful design, with orders coming in internationally from airlines and military, then further funding was stopped and the project vanished in history. (The US later came up with the Bell Boeing "Osprey" as a multi-versatile aircraft that combined helicopter and-fast-flight capabilities, but it keeps crashing now and then, and never was a real good design when you consider balance and ground effect.) The Fairey Rotodyne was much more stable and faster, with less fuel consumption. (I built one of those as an Airfix model ) Well done and deserved, over to Eichhörnchen

A really good one and a real stinker
What a fascinating aircraft - I also built the Airfix kit as a kid and have three of them even now, in different historical boxings What is this then?
