HELP!!!!!!!!

My PC has gone nuts... Ive had it for just over a year with no major problems, until today...
Basically something(i don't know what) happened and none of my games work, including steam and firefox has gone too. I'm using ie8 to type this. Ive tried system restore but that broken all i get is the box where that calander should be, but its empty no squares or numbers and thus i cant restore. A compete system recovery i'm calling plan Z, but other that that i dont know what to do, please can you help me.
