Default Looking for an new GPU...

... to replace my GF8800GTS 320MB.

I've been checking out the ATI 4870HD 512MB, how it would compare with what I have now?

If you can afford it GO FOR IT!

The only reason I am saying that is GDDR5. That is insane!

Also the ATI cards have HDMI audio. Set it up right and you will get 7.1 LCPM (Lossless) audio going to the Amp. Then get a HDMI to DVI adapter and go from the HDMI out of the Amp and into the display.

Now of course this means you have to have an Amp that does all this. However, If you are considering such a card you likely have the funds to invest in an Amp.

BTW don't bother with a crossfire. Spend the money supporting a X2 and reduce the strain on the power supply and the power bill.

Check this out!

BTW in case you are looking for stuff to go with that card.

The audio solution: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882120081

The HDMI cable: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812189053 (Don't go with 50 dollar cables.. HDMI is either works or no work there is no middle ground.)

HDMI to DVI: Either http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812226015 as an adapter but I suggest http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812270114

(NOTE: Assumes the Amp will be 6 ft from the PC)

230€ isnt lot from a GPU, that's why I'm checking it out. Add 50€ to that and I can get an 1gig version.

Do you mean for the X2 version?

I strongly suggest the X2 because it will mean you are good to go for atleast a year. Until the Sub 40nm cards start to hit the market.

A year? May I clarify abit. I dont give a flying **** if I get 1000FPS or 100FPS in a game, as long as it runs nice and smooth. So, my 8800GTS having served me for 3-ish years now very nicely, if a YEAR is all that an X2 can give me, I turn to consoles.

Ow and no, I meant the normal version, not X2. That goes way over my price range.

EDIT: NEAALL!!! Why the heck is F-O-C-K now censored?!

Nvidia just came out with a new card as well. I have always been an Nvidia fan so I'm a bit partial in my responses. I never met a ATI card that I like. It is not the cards really but the catalyst interface and crap I think are not the best. I do not like having to go to a third party for tweaking programs. I find the Nvidia interface for setting up the card is just easier.

Same as Warhawk,

Once Nvidia, Always Nvidia

I have looked in some ATI Control panels, but really imo the interface doesnt make sense at all
what is easy to change in Nvidia is dificult to find in Ati...at least that's how I experienced it.

I used to be an nvidia fan - switched to ati about 5 years back when for whatever reason nvidia driver support went down the tubes. Yes - I know - they fixed the issues and have gotten back to being excellent. My next card will likely be an Nvidia - for 3 reasons. Price is comparable - as is performance. ATI still has a slight edge on framerate - but color saturation Nvidia wins. As its a rare human who can see over 60 frames a second, I am headed toward where the grass is literally greener on the other side. Since those 2 factors are about even - the last factor is cooling - and right now - nvidia wins this. The new cards from ATI are bloody barnburners - and ATI for some reason hasn't done enough to keep em adequately cooled at stock.

I have had the 8800 GTS 320MB, the 8800 GT 512 MB and now have the HD4870 512MB. All I can say, Dowly, is that the HD 4870 blasts the 8800 GT out of the water, and eats the 8800 GTS while laughing. Its the best card I have had, it runs everything on full. (That I have tried) Its stronger than the nVidia 260, and almost as strong as the nVidia 280 (which costs twice as much).

Yeah, Nvidia is not shy about high prices on the new cards. I like the 9800 GT I have. Works great. Might SLI the card. Who knows, runs the games very well as is.
