So I think the numbers need to be considered in that context.

“One positive spin is that if we are only aware of 5% of the total cases, the implication is that 95% of cases have only resulted in either mild symptoms such that the infected people did not consider it serious enough to seek medical help, or indeed the virus may be causing an inapparent infection. This would significantly reduce the apparent mortality and morbidity rates. If at current rates 41/1400 people have died, taking into account that 1400 is only 5% of the total that means 0.1% mortality, less than flu. Perhaps this analysis might be important when considering the implications of the paper.”

The South Korean government has announced 31 new cases of the coronavirus in one day, bringing the country's total to 82. The first coronavirus death in South Korea also occurred today.

According to the South Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 23 of the new cases went to the same church as a previously diagnosed patient.

South Korea's health authorities said they will test all 1,001 members of the congregation who attended a service with the infected patient for the coronavirus.

Patients and staff at Cheongdo Daenam hospital, where the death occurred, are being tested for the virus, and environmental disinfection is currently ongoing.

Coronavirus patients can have similar viral load whether or not they show symptoms.

Researchers in China are saying that people with the novel coronavirus may have the same viral load -- or amount of virus in their body -- whether or not they are actually showing symptoms of illness.

"(This) suggests the transmission potential of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients,” the researchers wrote in the letter.

“These findings are in concordance with reports that transmission may occur early in the course of infection."

It comes as the largest and most comprehensive study yet of the novel coronavirus found it is highly contagious, more so than severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).

Two Diamond Princess passengers die from coronavirus.

Two passengers from the Diamond Princess have died after being infected with the new coronavirus. They are the first fatalities among the passengers and crew of the quarantined ship docked at Yokohama Port, near Tokyo.

Japanese government officials say an 87-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman, both Japanese, died on Thursday. Health ministry officials are looking into the infection routes.

Both individuals had underlying health problems.

Japan appears to be on the cusp of a large coronavirus outbreak.


Not appears, but is already happening in my opinion. Japan's prime minister is urging companies to let their employees work from home if possible, or to adjust work hours in order to avoid rush hour train crowds so the virus won't spread as quickly. City governments around Japan are also cancelling public events until further notice. But all of this is too little too late as far as I'm concerned.

Furthermore, the government reporting of a newly infected cases here is being delayed and spread out in order to avoid public panic.

Another coronavirus case confirmed today in Sapporo, Japan.

A man in his 40s has tested positive for the virus in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo. That's the 88th case of infection outside passengers and crew from the cruise ship Diamond Princess.

That makes 5 total now in Hokkaido, with 4 new cases in just the past week- all unrelated, plus none had recent travel history to China! How many more are currently unconfirmed or unreported? It's spreading quickly now and very soon it will be knocking on my door. There is no escape. It is coming...

Japan's health authorities confirmed seven new cases of coronavirus infection on Thursday. That brings the total number of patients outside passengers and crew from the ship to over 90.

Among the new cases, a man in his 80s has tested positive in Kanagawa. He had been staying at a hospital where an elderly woman who died from the virus had received care.

And in Fukuoka, a man in his 60s became the first patient in the Kyushu region.

The man in Kanagawa was in the same hospital as the infected woman from the Diamond Princess who died today, but he was apparently there for a different illness. She was in isolation the whole time at the hospital since February 12, but he still became infected. I wonder how many of the medical staff and patients at that hospital are now infected. I pray that medical facilities across Japan don't eventually become overwhelmed and break down like they have in China.

I'm too busy today to research it, but just from reading Travellers postings it seems that age and other health issues that person or person's have contribute to the early dismissal's of many of the patents dying.

Japan is not a small nation, but is one of the largest close to China and now they are experiencing the up swing of this convid 19 virus which has not peaked anywhere that we know of.

Four days after the river cruise, on Jan. 22, the mother-in-law of the taxi driver in his 70s said she felt fatigued. Six days later, the woman, who was in her 80s, sought medical help but was told to monitor her condition. On Feb. 1, she was hospitalized after being given a diagnosis of pneumonia.

Her respiratory condition worsened, and she was moved to another hospital on Feb. 6. She was given the coronavirus test on Feb. 12. A day later, she died, and the results of her test soon came back positive. Her death was the first from the virus in Japan.

After health officials in Tokyo discovered that the infected taxi driver was the son-in-law of the woman who had died, they started tracing his contacts. They discovered that he had attended the boat party, and tested everyone who had been there. Seven others who were confirmed infected said they had no symptoms.

Yes, the next week in Japan should be revealing. Cross your fingers they don't get a surge of new cases.

Meanwhile, good news: Coronavirus: 81% of cases are 'mild,' study says

Importantly, the study found that the case fatality rate rises with age. Specifically, up to the age of 39 years old, the fatality rate is 0.2%, at the age of 40, it is 0.4%, 1.3% for those in their 50s, 3.6% for people in their 60s, and finally, 8% for those in their 70s.

By comparison, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that health experts have likened coronavirus to affected fewer people in 2002–2003, but the death rate was 14–15%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In terms of the geotemporal spread of the virus, the study confirms that “COVID-19 spread outward from Hubei Province sometime after December 2019, and by February 11, 2020, 1,386 counties across all 31 provinces were affected.”

The study also found that people with cardiovascular disease were at the highest risk of death from coronavirus, followed by those with diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, hypertension, and cancer.

Furthermore, the authors note a “downward trend in the overall epidemic curve.”

The epidemic curve showed that the onset of symptoms “peaked around January 23–26, then began to decline, leading up to February 11,” they write.

They add that this suggests “that perhaps isolation of whole cities, broadcast of critical information (e.g., promoting handwashing, mask wearing, and care seeking) with high frequency through multiple channels, and mobilization of [a] multi-sector rapid response teams is helping to curb the epidemic.”

Imported cases of COVID-19 in travelers have been detected in the U.S. Person-to-person spread of COVID-19 also has been seen among close contacts of returned travelers from Wuhan, but at this time, this virus is NOT currently spreading in the community in the United States.

42 states have persons under investigation.

Thousands of Americans voluntarily self-quarantine after returning from China

It's up to the state and local health departments to decide how to manage their residents under self-quarantine.

3 more confirmed cases in Hokkaido, Japan.

The three include two male elementary school students in Nakafurano Town. The other is a woman in her 40s. She lives in Chitose City. The woman was working as a quarantine officer at New Chitose Airport.

A total of eight cases have now been confirmed in the prefecture.

South Korea reports 3 military members infected with coronavirus.

Three members of the South Korean military, including an officer each from the army, the navy and the air force, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

All three had a connection to the Daegu region, one of the epicenters of the growing South Korean virus outbreak.

There are now 156 infections from the virus in South Korea, and one death.

South Korean military to restrict all soldiers from leaving bases over coronavirus fears.

All South Korea military personnel will be restricted from leaving their bases, going on vacations and staying out overnight from Saturday, the country's Defense Ministry announced today.

South Korea infections jump sharply again to more than 200 in total. Total number of infected nearly doubles in 24 hours.

Another 48 cases of the novel coronavirus that is spreading rapidly around the world have been diagnosed in South Korea, the South Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said in a statement today.

In total, there are now 204 cases across the country. The number of infections in South Korea has almost doubled in 24 hours.

Among the 48 new cases, 42 are from the city of Daegu, two in Seoul, two in South Gyeongsang Province, one in Gyeonggi Province and one in the city of Gwangju.

Cases rise in China as fears of self-sustaining outbreaks grow in East Asia.

Hopes for a slowdown in the spread of the novel coronavirus were dashed Friday as the number of new cases rose in China, and outbreaks worsened in Japan and South Korea.

Authorities in China's Hubei province confirmed an additional 631 cases of the virus Thursday, 282 more than the previous day, taking the total number of cases at the epicenter of the outbreak to 62,662.

Meanwhile, fears are growing of self-sustaining outbreaks elsewhere in Asia. Outside China, the largest coronavirus outbreaks have been in South Korea and Japan, where hundreds of people were infected on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which began disembarking passengers this week from Yokohama Bay.

I hate to say this, but it looks like the virus is self-sustaining and there's no stopping it. Those of you here who are not located in Asia, I strongly suggest that you prepare now if you haven't already, because it now appears that the virus will be coming to your city or town sooner or later. Even if you don't become infected, there's a good chance it will disrupt your lives in some way (travel, product shortages, hospitals, jobs, etc).

New coronavirus case confirmed in Humboldt County, California.

The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Branch has received confirmation from the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of one case of COVID-19 in a Humboldt County resident. A close contact who has symptoms is being tested as well.

This marks the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Humboldt County. Presently, the ill individuals are doing well and self-isolating at home, while being monitored for symptoms by the Public Health Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Unit.

Did anyone actually believe there were zero new confirmed cases in the US this past 3 weeks? It looks as though the US government and the CDC borrowed the Wuhei government's instruction manual on how to perform cover-ups.
