Default China Is Thinking About Building Kilometer-Long Spaceships

You can't take that away from them...they think big.

Quote:
What’s more, they could do it – at least according to Mason Peck, a professor of aerospace engineering and former NASA chief technologist who described the idea as “entirely feasible”.

The ISS is said to be in the end years of its life cycles, malfucntions mount up and Russia warns that it is just a quesiton of few years now until the station becomes a dangerous hazard to the crew due to life-threatrening breakdowns.

Thats the status and durability of our technology. Not something I would bet my life on for years or decades long.

However, technological and scientific and industrial development in the past took place in a.) jumps instead of linear development, and at b.) exponetial acceleartion, not linear or constant speed.

A chaos variable thatr interferes with it now is the uncertainty of how the planety ecosphere changes and how it will effect human life, civilization and thus: industrial and research processes. Foci may change. Knowledge may get lost. Ressoruces may be needed to get invested differently. This could hamper scientific development. Alsol, there are strong anti-intellectual and anti-academical movements in both the Christian-Judaic culutrla sphere as well as in the Islamic sphere. Finally there is the intellectual self-deconstruction of the Western academical tradition, and its replacement with practicing correct ideology and correct opinion as defined by the mob.

If China is serious and start to build mining facilities to be placed on the Moon as first step to build this huge spaceship

I'll tell you USA would not be sitting there and do nothing.

I think it may start a new space race(forgot the correct word)

I have no doubt that any space capable country could assemble in space a craft 1,000 meters long. The question is why?

The only reason you would need to build a craft that long is if there are components that need to be kept 1,000 meters apart. Absent that requirement, it would be much better to build a more compact craft that radiates outward in a balanced manner. A sort of Lego Sphere comes to mind.

Maintaining attitude control over a craft 1,000 meters long brings up difficulties concerning balance, moment, and stress that would have to be offset by a considerable benefit.

Tell that the Empire's engineers...

Ah, wait, you're right. Their stuff always breaks up in the end...

When JFK said that the human would place a man on the Moon before the end of this decade(60's) The development of Saturn V gave many positive side effects.

I know the same will happen here-When the Chinese regime gives the go-ahead there will be many positive side effect from developing this massive spaceship.

The U.S. and those evile Russkies have already done everything that could be done. If China wants make a name for itself in space it needs an original idea. Unfortunately I don’t think building a big kilometer long craft is it.

Your comment made me think.

Could it be so, that China invite USA and Russia to take part in this development ? Instead of compete invite and work together against a common goal.

I'm convinced there will come something good out of this.

Humanity has not gotten anywhere close to everything that can be done. Nowhere near it.

Of course there’s more that can be done. That’s why I said if China wants to make a name for itself in space it needs an original idea. Successful manned space flight, prolonged stays, docking, space walk, interplanetary travel and communications, experiments, moon landings. All done.

A kilometer long craft seems original and might place China on the list of firsts, I just don’t see it happening.

Don't see it happening.

Do you think they don't proceed after having examine the plans ?
or
Do you think they will fail in their attempt to build this huge spaceship

I believe they will try if these examine they starts with says it is possible

Spacetruck

One of the first thing China will do is to develop mining machinery to be placed on the Moon and the product need to be transported to a processing factory and here the Chinese will invent the Spacetruck.

Taking a driver license to "drive" this type of truck will quit different.

Like anything we do China will have to have a stated purpose to accompany the plan to build a kilometer long space craft. To build such a thing just to say you did seems pointless.

I think our plans are to establish a moon base and develop the means extract and transport its resources back to earth and maybe use the moon (The Eighth Continent) as a launch point to Mars.

Not sure what the purpose of a kilometer long space craft would be.
