Returning player question

Hi all

I'm starting to play SH4 for the first time and hope to play with as many realistic settings on as i can cope with, i'm also keen to try some of the mods out. My question is, is it better to play a few campaigns of the vanilla game just to get the hang of things or is it best to just pick a super mod and just dive in? *bad pun im sorry!*

I just basically want to know if playing the vanilla game will get me into bad habits, and which mods would you recommend are beginner friendly?
