U-955 (Type VIIC)

Sunk on 7 June, 1944 in the Bay of Biscay north of Cape Ortegal, Spain, in position 45.13N, 08.30W by depth charges from a British Sunderland aircraft (Sqdn 201/S). 50 dead (all hands lost).

U-960 (Type VIIC)





Sunk on 19 May, 1944 in the Mediterranean north-west of Algiers, in position 37.20N, 01.35E, by depth charges from the American destroyers USS NiblackUSS Ludlow and Wellingtons (Sqdn 36) and Venturas (Sqdn 500). 31 dead and 20 survivors.

U-963 (Type VIIC)


Scuttled at 1000hrs on 20 May, 1945 on the Portuguese west coast near Nazaire in position 39.36N, 09.05W. The entire crew was interned. 48 survivors (No casualties).

U-966 (Type VIIC)



Sunk 10 Nov, 1943 in the Bay of Biscay near Cape Ortegal, Spain, by depth charges from British, American and Czech Wellington and Liberator aircraft (Sqdn 612/B, 311/D, VB-103/E, VB-110/E). 8 dead and 42 survivors.

U-968 (Type VIIC)



Surrendered on 16 May, 1945 at Loch Eriboll, Scotland. Boat ended up in Operation Deadlight.

U-971 (Type VIIC)



In this photo you can see the survivors of U-971 recovered by the HMCS Haida.
Sunk 24 Jun, 1944 in the English Channel north of Brest, in position 49.01N, 05.35W, by depth charges from the British destroyer HMS Eskimo, the Canadian Destroyer HMCS Haida and depth charges from a Czech Liberator aircraft (Sqdn. 311/O). 1 dead and 51 survivors.

U-977 (Type VIIC)


Interned at Mar del Plata, Argentina on 17 August, 1945 after a 66-day submerged trip from Norway. Surrendered to USA in Boston on 13 Nov, 1945. She was torpedoed off Massachusetts on 13 Nov, 1946 during torpedo trials by the US submarine USS Atule.

U-978 (Type VIIC)

Transferred from Trondheim, Norway to Loch Ryan, Scotland on 29 May, 1945 for Operation Deadlight.

Scuttled on 24 May, 1945 at Amrum, Germany, in position 54.38N, 08.23E, after running aground.


U-990 (Type VIIC)


Sunk 25 May 1944 in North Sea west of Bodö, in position 65.05N, 07.28W, by depth charges from a British Liberator aircraft (Sqdn. 59/S). 20 dead and 33 survivors.

U-992 (Type VIIC)

Transferred from Narvik, Norway to Loch Ryan on 19 May, 1945 for Operation Deadlight

U-995 (Type VIIC-41)





Stricken at Trondheim, Norway on 8 May, 1945. Surrendered to Britain and then transferred to Norway in Oct 1948.
Became the Norwegian submarine Kaura on 1 Dec, 1952. Stricken in 1965. Returned to Germany where she became a museum ship in Oct 1971

U-997 (Type VIIC-41)
The first on the right

Transferred from Narvik, Norway to Lisahally, Northern Ireland on 19 May, 1945 for Operation Deadlight

U-1004 (Type VIIC-41)





Transferred from Bergen, Norway to Loch Ryan on 30 May, 1945 for Operation Deadlight

Scuttled on 2 May, 1945 near Lübeck in position 53.54N, 10.51E, after damages by rockets from 4 British Typhoon aircraft (2nd Tactical Air Force, Sqdn 245). 2 dead, unknown number of survivors.

U-1009 (Type VIIC-41)



Surrendered on 10 May, 1945 at Loch Eriboll, Scotland. Boat ended up in Operation Deadlight.

U-1020 (Type VIIC-41)


Missing in the North Sea since leaving Horten on 22 Nov, 1944. No explanation exists for its loss. 52 dead (all hands lost).

Scuttled on 5 May, 1945 in Gelting Bay. Wreck later raised and broken up.

U-1058 (Type VIIC)

Surrendered at Lough Eriboll, Scotland on 10 May, 1945. Became H23 and USSR submarine S 82 in November 1945.


U-1060 (Type VIIF)


Grounded on 27 October 1944 in the North Sea south of Bronnoysund, in position 65.24N, 11.59,5E after damages by rockets and depth charges from Firefly and 2 Barracuda aircraft of the British carrier HMS Implacable, 2 British Handley Page Halifax aircraft (Sqdn 502/D/T) and from 2 Czechoslovakian Liberator aircraft (Sqdn 311/H/Y). 12 dead and 43 survivors.

U-1061 (Type VIIF)

Surrendered in Bergen, Norway in May 1945 and was transferred to Loch Ryan, Scotland later that month. Boat ended up in Operation Deadlight.

U-1062 (Type VIIF)


The boat left Bergen, Norway on 3 January 1944 with 39 torpedoes to supply the Monsun boats in the far east. The boat did better than U-1059 and made it to Penang on April 19, 1944. The boat unloaded the torpedoes and left Penang for Europe on 15 July 1944 but was intercepted by an escort carrier group in the central Atlantic on 30 September where the destroyer escort USS Fessenden sank her with depth charges. 55 dead (all hands lost).

U-1101 (Type VIIC)

Scuttled on 5 May, 1945 in Gelting Bay. Later raised and wreck broken up.

U-1105 (Type VIIC-41)



Surrendered at Loch Eriboll, Scotland, on 10, May 1945.
