Default Question about Sub evasion mission in 688 Attack Sub (the 1989Sim)

Hello everyone,

im quite new to this forum but anyway hope someone is able to help me here.
I recently dug out the old 688 Attack Sub sim and started playing it again in DOSBOX.Works great and im having a lot of fun with it ,but im stuck in the missions where u have to evade soviet submarines without sinking them.
The mission orders say roughly: enter the atlantic and shake those subs, u mustn be any longer detected by them when u reach the atlantic.
Well here s my Prob:

How do i know wether they can still detect me or not??( I never know if I did loose them or not)

I read the game manual time and again ,there are a few tactics mentioned how to loose a sub on your tail.I tried them all. Then sneaked low speed towards the open sea, just to have my mission aborted in the end and to be told that those soviets were still on my tail..

It would be great if anyone could help me with that.Hope someone around here is still playing this old sim and remembers a thing or two about it.

Thanks anyway and have a nice day everyone,

Eric

Have you tried hiding in thermals, and are you rolling at about 1/3rd-1/4th engine power?

Hey there,

yea i tried both,thermal layers,going dead slow,sprint and drift.
I guess sometimes it works, but I cant know for sure, because apparently
theres no way to check wether or not they can detect you.
So i gues, u just have to try again and again until u randomly got them off ur tail at the end of the mission. Its a bit frustrating...
Nevertheless,thanks for commenting.

Best regards,

Erik

[Shake'em Mission]
There are several very deep holes at the bottom near where the scenario starts. Keep your speed as slow as you can, put out your towed array and sink down into one of those holes. Turn off your engines and drift. Eventually they won't hear you any more and you'll win the mission. (I'll have to try it now.)

[Escape]
Escape took me 1 hour and 16 minutes to win. Use the "Contour Imaging System" (C key) to
get a better idea of what's in front of you. Use only 1/3 power the whole time and stay as deep as you can in the center of the strait. I had about 2 pixels between the bottom of my sub marker and the bottom marker. A couple of times you will see his subs as "X" contacts, but remember that your sonar is probably twice as good as his. You should use your towed
array the whole time. In 688 I never use the top down views, the Contour view is quicker and cleaner.
