Kim is of course not an elected politician, he also fell into this dictator role automatically, had to play it and act accordingly to survive, he is not really dumb.

I know for sure that N. Korea wants a reunification with South Korea, you can think about that what you want, and it is not intended to be done "by force" (by either of the Koreas).
There has been at least one north korean delegation in Germany recently, to secretly ask and plan how a reunification could be done, taking Germany as an example (and the only one in modern times).
But other than China, the almost bankrupt Russia had to pump too much money and resources into the also bankrupt former GDR, all the russian oil (at the time) and GDR-made goods like freezers or furniture being sold to the West (and not available for their own people) for foreign exchange.
The drawback of Russia from the GDR had been planned long before, russian tanks and other hardware withdrawn from critical locations, all GDR military and certain police units ordered to stay in their barracks at all costs by Russia already in late september 1989. Which was the reason why the then upcoming reunification did not develop into a blood bath.
Russia did not even inform the then head of state, Mr. Honecker, about their plans.

Any kind of reunification in Korea will not be liked by China though, nor the US. The korean delegation learned soon enough that it would not work like in Germany. China was not pleased either to hear of those plans. But Korea cannot reunite when both big blocks do not want it.
I take it that for China and the US, Kim went too far.

Just imagine what happens if Korea would be one country again. The new Korea will have a border to China, i will most probably have a western orientation. This is something that China does not want, nor does the US - the reason and right for the US to send and maintain troops in and around South Korea would most probably be withdrawn. Military presence at sea maybe, but no or less bases in China's antechamber.
The question is also IF such a move would destabilise the general situation.

According to the news here in Denmark-There seems to be some kind of panic in NK.

People is hoarding basic food and imported food or stuff is impossible to come by.

(the news paper had a link to the English version of this story, but it was a code 502)

In my imagination the top/elite start to break apart and anarki arise among the top politicians and the elite. Fraction will start to pop-up in NK
Ending with a civil war.
Of course this will not happen-they will live peacefully ever after
