The first day of the Genoa Conference (April 10–May 19, 1922), the post-WWI convention of 34 nations to discuss the economic reconstruction of central and eastern Europe and to explore ways to improve relations between Soviet Russia and European capitalist regimes. Ship Losses: Countess of Seafield (United Kingdom) The cargo ship caught fire and sank in the North Sea off Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

Fatty Arbuckle was acquitted of all criminal charges in his third trial for the death of Virginia Rappe. The jury deliberated for only one minute. (A photo of the verdict) Ship Losses: Grace van Dusen (United States) The schooner sank in the Atlantic Ocean of West Quoddy, Maine. Her crew were rescued.

Rory O'Connor, with 400 other anti-Treaty Irish Republican Army men under his command, occupies the Four Courts building in the centre of Dublin in defiance of the Provisional Government. 400 anti-Treaty Irish rebels seize the Four Courts building in Dublin, marking the beginning of a 85 day occupation, culminating in "The Battle of Dublin."

Treaty of Rapallo between Germany and Soviet Russia, ending the German-Russian dispute and breaking the isolation of the two powers. Resumption of diplomatic relations, most favoured nation clause in economic relations and mutual waiver of damages suffered. Ship Losses: Lusitania (Portugal) The schooner was abandoned in the Atlantic Ocean (52°24′N 5°10′W). All fifteen crew were rescued by Gaelic Star ( United Kingdom).

Cemal Azmi, who had carried out the Armenian genocide while he was serving as the Ottoman Empire's Governor of the Trebizond Province, was shot to death along with his former chief adviser, Bahaeddin Şakir, while both of them were walking on Uhlandstrasse in Berlin. Ship Losses: Ardachy (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground off Moville, County Donegal, Ireland. She was refloated on 24 April. Berlin (United States) The 1,634-gross register ton bark was wrecked without loss of life on the Egegik Flats (58°13′N 157°31′W) on the south-central coast of the Territory of Alaska southwest of Naknek and became a total loss. The steamers Nushagak and San Juan (both United States) rescued all 225 people on board.

Inauguration of the monument to the dead of the Tyneside brigades in La Boisselle, France. Ship Losses: General Gordon (Spain) The cargo ship capsized and sank at Casablanca, French Morocco. She was refloated on 2 May. Zero (United Kingdom) The cargo ship collided with Aeolus ( United States) at Montevideo, Uruguay and sank.

The fantastic Ulysses S. Grant Memorial in Washington, D.C. is dedicated on the 100th anniversary of Grant's birth. The sculptor, Henry Schrady, worked on it for 20 years - and died 2 weeks before it was unveiled.

Zhang Zuolin, ruler of Manchuria, begins the First Zhili-Fengtian War for control of Beijing (then "Peking") Ship Losses: Ilia (Germany) The auxiliary sailing ship was destroyed by fire at Emden, Germany. Victoria de Larrinaga (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground on the Mouchoir Bank, Bahamas. She was abandoned on 1 May. Her crew were rescued by Lake Fairlie ( United States).

The Monument to the March Dead is unveiled in Weimar, Germany to memorialize workers killed in the 1920 Kapp Putsch. It was later destroyed by the Nazi regime, who considered it "degenerate art". Ship Losses: Sterling (Norway) The cargo liner came ashore in Seydisfjord, Iceland, and was wrecked. All on board were rescued. Whittier (United States) The steam tanker ran aground on Saunders Reef, about 10 miles south of Point Arena, California and was wrecked. All on board were rescued.
