A Scottish court has delayed a decision on whether to sign a letter requesting a Brexit extension if Boris Johnson refuses to do so.

Campaigners asked the judges to agree to enforce legislation passed by MPs aimed at preventing a no-deal exit.

The Benn Act requires Boris Johnson to ask EU leaders for a delay if a deal has not been agreed by 19 October.

Judges at the Court of Session said they could not rule on the matter until the political debate has "played out".

The House of Commons has only sat on four Saturdays since 1939, including on 2 September that year, due to the outbreak of World War Two.

The last time there was a Saturday sitting was 3 April 1982, due to the invasion of the Falkland Islands.

There is always at least two versions of every story. This one appears to be far less inflamatory.

President Sassoli restated the position adopted by the European Parliament in September that an extension should be granted to allow time for either elections or a referendum.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar will meet for talks later to discuss the UK's Brexit proposals.

Downing Street said the meeting was to allow "detailed discussions" on the process of securing a deal.

Mr Johnson has said he remains "cautiously optimistic" about a deal.

I don't see these talks being any other than a means to keeping channels of communication open.

Varadkar does not have EU permission to act unilaterally.

Former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has issued a plea to EU foreign ministers to avoid a "catastrophic failure in statecraft" over Brexit.

He has urged them in an open letter to reach a compromise with Prime Minister Boris Johnson while they still can.

Delaying Brexit would only increase the chances of a no-deal exit, he warned.

"If they think this is bad - just wait until what happens after Boris wins an election," he told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg in an exclusive interview.

Mr Hunt - who lost out to Mr Johnson in July's Conservative leadership contest - has written to the 27 EU foreign ministers, urging them to show greater flexibility in talks with the UK.

The PM is "using the Queen to deliver a pre-election party political broadcast", Jeremy Corbyn has said.

The Labour leader called holding a Queen's Speech, which is due to take place on 14 October, before an expected election a "cynical stunt" in a speech.

And he said he is "champing at the bit" to have an election once a no-deal Brexit is taken "off the table".

The Queen's Speech allows the government to outline its priorities at the start of a parliamentary year.

And last but not least....the above is rich coming from Steptoe, someone who doesn't believe in or support the royal family and is currently stalling on passing a vote for a general election.

The two leaders had "constructive" talks on the UK's Brexit proposals and believe a deal "is in everybody's interest", a statement said.

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay will meet the EU's Michel Barnier on Friday.

On Wednesday, EU leaders accused the UK of proposing untested ideas, adding that progress had been limited.

A crunch EU summit next week on 17 and 18 October is seen as the last chance for the UK and EU to agree a deal ahead of 31 October deadline.
