Delays to cancer diagnosis and treatment due to coronavirus could cause thousands of excess deaths in the UK within a year, research suggests.

Scientists suggest there could be at least 7,000 additional deaths - but in a worst case scenario that number could be as high as 35,000.

There are concerns routine screenings, urgent referrals and treatments have been delayed or cancelled.

NHS England said it was working hard to restore services.

This is just one of the inevitable consequences not only here in the UK but possibly most other countries.

well as I see it, there is a middle way. Every politician acts as if the only two options are do Nothing or complete lockdown.

Social distancing, wearing masks, washing your hands regularly, limiting access to nursing homes and long term care facilities would take care of 90-95% of the problem as I see it.

^ I agree, it's just a pity the politicians who make the decisions don't see it that way.

As you may recall, the whole idea behind the lockdown and why we all had to go along was to "flatten the curve" so the health system would not be overwhelmed by the mass of Covid patients that were supposed to show up.

Currently, the system is not anywhere close to being overwhelmed on a national level. If certain states or cities have a spike which they cannot handle, they could certainly send patients to other cities or states with excess capacity or adopt local emergency measures.

Then there's this one:
While this is completely accurate, one must ask why show those figures? Sundays have always had less deaths. Your daily average continues to be much higher than that. Just day before, on June 27th, there were over 500 deaths, on the next day (29th) 366 and the day after that 700+. But those don't look as rosy as 273 deaths, right?
you could look at any data, look at any way to calculate it, daily, weekly, weekly average, the result is still the same, the peak was hit in april and has been going down ever since and you see pretty much the same in most countries, including Sweden which did not shut down.

It's a BS graph by a bank with vested interest to see the economy reopen.
How can you say it is BS when all the data they quote is accurate?

Everyone wants the economy to re-open. If you are going to convince people that they have to stop receiving a paycheque or lose their businesses, they you need the facts to show that this is the only way to stop the spread of Covid 19.

Yes, I think that makes sense and would work. Despite what politicians say, I would think the average man could see that and take those steps.

Sweden and Israel are in the midst of wave no. 2. Cases in Israel are higher today than they were at the peak of first wave -although the country did an excellent job of containing the pandemic, they decided to ease lock down too early. Now they pay the price - the enemy is back, stronger than before.

Sweden also now gets hit by economic consequences - as if it had done a full lock down in the first. They have launched an examination panel why this is so. Just that their standardized mortality rate is over 4 times as high as in Germany, for exmaple, which did a full lockdown. They took two gambles, and lost twice.

Holiday season open. Two or three federal states want to abandon masks in shops etc - with all the German holiday tourists from other states, who had not gone to foreign places this year but stayed inside Germany, rushing into their states and 2-3 weeks later rushing out again and scattering across all the country to distrubute any infection outbreaks equally. Even smarter.

ERs in Florida get selective in accepting - or not accepting - Corona patients. They are full.

https://www.local10.com/news/local/2...navirus-cases/

A new study in the Lancet shows that the hope for herd immunity is illusory. They examined Spain with its very high number of Corona victims (highest number in Europe), and found only 5% of the population having antibodies now. "Unreachable" and "unethical" they call any such ambition.

All hope is gone if the Germans start acting like Americans in a pandemic.

But then again, German leaders are actively express delivering in millions of Middle Easterners, so....

It really wouldn't surprise me if China started this virus epidemic deliberately, now they just wait for countries to collapse before they take over!!
