Can I call this a Bernard moment?

Either way, something interesting happened just before I showed up in port. :P
Obviously, mistakes were made.

I found this amusing in a 'wait, what?' type of way. I fired my last torpedo into a convoy I encountered on the way back home in May, '42. I got an oiler. And usually a convoy just changes course and reforms the lines, but this time, for reasons unknown, they...had a bit of a traffic jam. Had I more torpedoes I could have racked up some *serious* tonnage.

Usually happens when a waypoint for a change of direction is reached whilst under attack.

Explains a lot. Actually saw a collision happen this way once. A small merchant rammed clean into a T3 Tanker. The T3 limped off with decks awash. Not sure what happened to the small merchant, but comparing the sizes, I suppose 'it sank' is a likely option.

I wish I had proof, but three destroyers were trying to kill me at the moment it happened. The fourth was stuck in the reforming convoy, thankfully.

Ramming does NOT always work.

It was my first war patrol on this career, so I decided to be bold and go toe to toe with a destroyer on the surface. While observing a lone merchant ship in the process of sinking, a curious destroyer showed up. Not wanting to be detected, I decided to stop watching my handy work and slip away from the scene. Curious destroyer become a pesky destroyer. Long story short, I torpedoed him way too far forward, just in front of the A turret. That sent him limping away at a mere 6kts. So what did I decide to do? CHASE HIM! My crew looked at me with disbelief. We surfaced some 3km astern, and immediately took (rather inaccurate) fire. I hung back at this distance until the rear turret was out of ammo. No hits scored . I promptly closed the distance and jumped on the flak gun when I got within a few hundred meters. Now it was just a matter of clean up, and one by one, I destroyed all the turrets and the machine guns on the port side. Have a look!

You can see the burn marks from the torpedo impact on the starboard bow.

Starboard machine guns don't have a clue what to do

Come out with your hands up! Nice and slow!

Good thing torpedoes have a minimum arming distance. I just now noticed this destroyer had 2 triple launchers.

My emblem says it all (note what Mickey wrote on the torpedo)

That's right destroyer. A u-boat chased you, caught up to you, took no hits from your aft turret, and rendered you defenseless with just 1 20mm flak gun. I trust your log book will correctly detail this engagement. Looking forward to reading the London Times when you return to port

That is AWESOME! I was half expecting you to hoist the Jolly Roger and board them! 8^ )

I've never taken on a destroyer like that. I've tackled a few armed trawlers, as I'm pretty good with the deck gun and once I've taken out their forward gunner, they're generally dead meat.

The trick is surfacing on the lee side of an unarmed merchant to give myself the time to set up the deck gun and be prepared to fire.

Kudos on a job well done!

Way off topic. That's why it's called the humorous SHIII thread.

We have a thread just for that picture here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=163913

Though I think it's been posted there more than once already.
