Default Hi new boat commander here :)

Hi there i'm sorry if i have posted in the wrong section but forum wouldnt let me post in SH4 wolves of the pacific subforum? (i logged in but it acted as if i wasnt logged in)

But anyway back to matters nautical!!

I used to play SH3 aaagges ago, loved it, was even better using voice commands in game as well.

Is it possible to use VC in SH4 ?

I recently bought the SH4 goldpack.(v1.5) Completed all the "tutorials" np.

So decided to start my US career. I have a few questions/concerns though.

1. What levels of realism does "normal", "hard" etc have??? Before i started career i changed the realism settings to custom level e.g. i have Manual torpedo firing on but i have realistic batterys and co2 etc off. I have event view on etc.

But when i choose normal, hard etc in career mode it seems to change all these settings to some predefined setting. For example i had it on normal and it changed torpedo solution to Automatic. Whereas i prefer it on manual

And yet when i put it on "hard" it does have the manual solutions on yay but i reckon it has sonar/radar realistic as well because its much harder to get map contacts reported. I was getting attacked/damaged without knowing who it was when i went into accel time mode! Help!

2. Minor point this But my departure port is PearlH and im going all the way to near tokyo fora recon mission. When i get there my fuel is down to 20(100) how am i supposed to make it back to PearlH? Even my nearest allied port (midway or dutch port?) is too far away. Is this a one way suicide mission?

You answered your own question.

That is exactly what it does, each setting is predefined as to what is checked and what is not. So what you want is "Custom", then put checkmarks beside the settings you want and Apply changes.

No, the mission is not a suicide mission, you probably were going too fast. It seems the 9-10 knots seems to be the best for fuel consumption. If you set it to flank all the way, you will run out of fuel. Also, make a stop at Midway to fuel up. As you approach Midway you will get a screen that pops up and select "Refit".

As for voice command, you could try doing a search for it. I think I remember someone using VC, but I don't remember what program they were using.

Uhm. Hi.

Not being able to get into the fleet boat subforums sounds strange. IIRC you can view them even if you arent. and if you tried posting there and are not logged in, you should be asked your username and password. To post.

Anyways, as some mod can surely move the thread and i want to contribute with advice for a change, I will just write away.

The realism settings are to be understood as "guidelines". Note that every option has its own checkbox. when you check/uncheck some of the options you see the realism-percentage in the center-bottom of the screen. the higher the value the greater the reward... I'm sure you get the idea. dont bother about the presets, as the game calculates the rewards based on the %-value.

I cant remember playing stock (you might want to try one of the great supermods; seriously) but you should be able to reach tokio and get back. Try refuling at midway on your way in, and set a slower speed. 6-8 knots should get you there and back (iirc).

edit: darn, peabody was faster.

But thats what i did. I startup up sh4 go into options change the realism options, then i goto start career and choose difficulty level normal and when in the game i discover manual torpedo solutions is off. Why is it off if i changed it in realism settings so its on? I then try to go back into options (during career) to see if i can change the settings but it only lets me change graphics and sound options.

ahhh i see brilliant - i'll do that next time

also what i tend to do if an enemy ship or convoy is detected (radio report or contact report) is if its reasonably near me i will sit in the direct general path of the enemy hiding underwater and when it is near - up periscope sort out the torpedo stuff bam fire away!

As i have found that if the ship/convoy is moving away from me it is very difficult to catch it up without it knowing im there.

Best option for airplanes to just go underwater when you get a contact report? One time i decide to engage one and it somehow sinks me...im sure it was a recon plane!

Ahhhhhh....we are talking two different locations. You are selecting at the menu screen. Once you enter the Captain's room. (office) look to the left and click on the Radio and you can set your choices for "Career Mode". Choose Custom and select what you want on/off.

If you are playing stock it is not necessary to "chase" convoys, there will be another one along soon, or you will find one by patrolling an area. Convoys in stock usually travel about 11 knots or so, depending what ships are in the convoy, so you can move away until you are out of contact and surface and get ahead of it. But you run the risk of using too much fuel and having the convoy change direction and you can't find it again. Detection depends on the night/day, weather, distance from the convoy etc.
On important thing to note in the stock game, if you are within contact range of a convoy, task force or just a couple of DDs. If you use Time Compression it is a Destroyer magnet. So once you make contact and start to move into position to get your shot, do not use time compression or the DDs with instantly detect you and head in your direction. (Most of the time)

ahh that sounds familiar from sh3 actually. thanks.

Gonna install RSRD with this.

Watching Torpedo run at this very moment - ha brilliant! Interesting mission ehh. The pow transport is used by the enemy to run in front of the enemy ship. So the sub cant get a clean sight. Any sneaky missions like that in sh4?

edit: is there minefield nets in sh4?

did my first patrol. managed to change the settings ok

couldnt really tell if RSRD was on. Although when i sailed past Midway there was a lot of ships in port or thereabouts maybe 20 ish at least.p

Anyway mission was head to Honshu. I sail to Midway - refuel and head onwards. I come across 2 jap fishing boats and think hrmm practice MTS time. Unfortunately i fired 3 torpedos and they all missed lol. Bit too nimble they were so i took them out with the deck gun.

I eventually get to the rendezvous point and HQ/COMSUB tell me to start attacking any jap shipping i find. I sink a couple of lone merchant ships and im thinking where is the juicy convoys when i get a radio bearing from HQ of a convoy just south of me (tho outside contact range) so i set myself into position. basically right in front of the convoy.

Convoy turns out to be 2 destroyers escorting a troop transport. tbh i cheat a little here because i go silent and down periscope and use the external view to help my position and when to attack.
I let the destroyer go past me and wait a bit then up periscope and start taking readings on the troop transport (the window of opportunity is small before it goes past) i need to be quick.

Unfortunately for me - the water is very rough indeed jeez! It was incredibly difficult to keep a bearing on the troop transport coz i couldnt see it due to the waves! Anyway eventually i manage to configure a solution that sinks it with 3 or 4 torps (only took 3 reloads ) In my defence i really only had once chance to sink it and if i missed it i'd be too late.
So i got it - crash dive because the destroyers sirens were blaring and their searchlights were out looking for me. Oh yeah i forgot to mention it was the dead of night!

I actually saved after i took out the troop transport and tried to take out one of the destroyers but i gave up because they were very very fast and were able to dodge my torpedos. Best i got was 1 hit from 4 torps. i think my main problem is i was basically fighting the ships from around 500 - 600 ish metres too close!

Back to Pearl i go (prolly have to stop at midway to refuel)
