Not an elk. Though elks have been roaming in the region this picture refers to, and they are slowly coming back.

^ folk art? not 'art', but to do with the folk, not only the one of Poland though – the depiction has several names.

^ That's the one in full glory

"[Liczyrzepa, Rübezahl] Rübenczal or Rybczal as a tailed demon, first known depiction by Martin Helwig, 1561",

"Rübezahl (Polish: Liczyrzepa, Duch Gór, Karkonosz, Rzepiór, or Rzepolicz; Czech: Krakonoš) is a folkloric mountain spirit (woodwose) of the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše, Riesengebirge, Karkonosze), a mountain range along the border between the historical lands of Bohemia and Silesia. He is the subject of many legends and fairy tales in German, Polish, and Czech folklore."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%BCbezahl

Often depicted as a tailed demon or even devil by the upcoming christian religion he initially was supposed to be a mountain spirit who sometimes helped wanderers, whilst also playing tricks on them now and then.

His name comes from robbing a princess, who did not want to live with him. She told him she would stay with him, if he could tell her how many beets/turnips were growing on a certain field – while he was off to count the beets she ran away.
She later mocked him as "Rübezahl" or beet-counter, which made him very angry.
So if you meet him somewhere in the giant mountains of Silesia, you better not call him by this name ..

Over to Buddahaid
