Ship Losses:

Arkley (United Kingdom) The auxiliary sailing vessel ran aground on the Sow and Pig Sands, in the North Sea off Blyth, Northumberland. She was abandoned by her crew, but was later boarded by some of the crew of the Blyth Lifeboat. Arkley was refloated and brought into Blyth Harbour.

15th June 1920

Giovanni Giolitti begins his 5th term as Prime Minister of Italy during a period of economic crisis and intense social conflict fueled by both left and right-wing movements.


Ship Losses:

Anna (Soviet Union) The cargo ship was destroyed by fire in the Skagerrak off Kristiansand, Norway.
Gladys (United Kingdom) The Thames barge collided with Chifuku Maru ( Japan) in the Thames Estuary off the Mucking Lightship and sank. Her crew were rescued. Gladys was later refloated.
Pacifico (United States) The cargo ship was destroyed by fire in the Atlantic Ocean off Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Pauline M. Cummins (United States) The schooner ran aground on the Hogsty Reef, Barbados and was a total loss. Her crew survived.
Robert Forest (United Kingdom) The tug sprang a leak in the North Sea and was beached off Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Her crew were rescued by the Spurn Lifeboat.

16th June 1920

A committee of jurists gathered at The Hague to plan the organization of the proposed Permanent Court of International Justice, a judicial body for the League of Nations.

Three African American men are lynched in Duluth, Minnesota by a mob of thousands. The lynchings in a northern state exposes the extent of violent racism in the country. Police station where the three men were dragged out.


Ship Losses:

Campos (Brazil Brazil) The cargo ship struck rocks in Victoria Girazill Bay and was beached at Rio de Janeiro.
F. R. Hazard (United States) The cargo ship collided with another vessel in Whitefish Bay and was consequently beached at Whitefish Point.

Lady Thea (Russia White Movement) The tanker caught fire at Batumi while loading kerosene and was scuttled by shelling by HMS Swallow ( Royal Navy).

Frontera (Norway) The cargo ship caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Cuba and was abandoned. She was later towed into Gibara.

French Marshal Ferdinand Foch arriving at Boulogne-sur-Mer for an Inter-Allied conference to discuss details of German reparation payments.


The U.S. Army began issuing a new honor, the World War I Victory Medal.

William C. May (United States) The schooner sprang a leak in the Atlantic Ocean and was abandoned. Her crew were rescued.

Kolyma (United States) The 29-gross register ton motor vessel was wrecked on the northwest coast of Sledge Island in the Bering Sea during a gale. Her crew of two survived.
Sesnon #5 (United States) While anchored about 0.25 nautical miles (0.46 km; 0.29 mi) west of the mouth of the Lost River (65°23′N 167°09′W) on the Bering Sea coast of the Territory of Alaska with no cargo or crew aboard, the 58-ton scow dragged her anchor during a gale, was driven ashore, and was wrecked.

Royal Navy battleships from the United Kingdom aided the Greek invasion of Turkey by bombarding the city of İzmit, a base of operations for Turkish nationalists. A dispatch from Greece reported that 1,000 Turks had been killed.
