Default getting sonar contacts while on surface normal?

Not sure this a bug or normal for sh4, but getting sonar contacts on the surface.

What sub are you rolling with..???

If it is an S class sub... that would NOT be the norm, as their sonar gear, was located top side & would NOT pick up sound/s from any contact, unless & until is was submerged.

As for any other sub class... think with their sonar gear, located on the underside... it would stand to reason for getting contact info... I do believe.

Not 100% sure on the other sub classes, so take that, with a grain of salt... but reasonably confident that I am recalling it correctly.

Using a porpoise. K didn’t realize US boats had sonar on underside and could use on the surface. used to sh3 and the uboats had to submerge for sonar. Guess I learned something if true

Thx!

Yeah, the S class subs in the U.S. fleet, shared the distinction of having their sonar gear topside... it's that crazy looking disco ball object, just before the deck gun...

As I recall, it was a shared distinction along with the Uboats, on all of them, I believe... the only particular sub/s in the Uboats I'm not 100% sure of, would be the Type XXI & Type XXIII... have included a link for the different uboats (including those actually built & used, as well as others that were developed, had some built but not used & others that were planned on but never went any further. ) & makes for interesting reading... link:

http://https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U-boat_types

With it locate top side.. it isn't gonna detect jack, not unless & until your sub is submerged... just the way of it...

Porpoise class boats are similar to later classes in that the sonar heads are mounted on the underside (I believe). I'm not sure if this was to specifically give it sonar capability while surfaced (but that would make sense). I suspect that their passive sonar would suffer some from the surface activity, though.

Fleet boats can get sonar contacts in surface. It is historical.

Correct. It is historical.
