It seems oddly familiar. It's really not massive-looking enough, but is it part of an Indian "Lion Capital"?

Ok, another clue is required I think, and a slight alteration. I said 19th century earlier, however more recent information that has come to light indicates that it was actually acquired in 1799 and it was likely made sometime between then and 1792.
This should help you chaps a fair bit.

Looking back, you described it as a paw of sorts, and said that you didn't think it was a lion, which suggests you don't have a complete animal here...
