Very nice shot.

USS FINBACK (SS-230) patrolling WNW of Truk in January of 1943; a routine hydrophone check detected a Jap. task force approaching at speed. Stayed on the surface long enough to get a speed/bearing fix, dove and maneuvered into a good firing position. Fired a six-fish fan shot at a Shokaku Class CV; range 3500 yards. We quickly dove to escape, and not hearing explosions we thought that we had missed. One large explosion, followed by two large secondary explosions. Then another few moments later, two more explosions. One of her escorts, turning to search for us, ran into our fan shot, and got hit by two fish originally aimed at the carrier. A lucky day for us.

Default Just lucky, I guess.

One of my fondest memories was when my parents first took me to Mobile to see the BB USS ALABAMA and SS USS DRUM. I hardly spent any time looking at the aircraft or the BB. From the moment I first saw her, I was hooked on DRUM. It was almost one of those movie moments where the silhouette is lighted and angels sing in the background.

In fact, I spent so much time crawling all over her, that even after all those years as a museum ship, I wreaked of diesel fuel and my parents had to make the long drive home with the windows down because of how I smelled. So, I joined the ranks of the pig boats at a young age.

Leap forward all these years and I've been proud to help with the preservation and restoration of DRUM. Ever since I played my first SubSim years ago on the NES, I've wanted to at least pretend to command DRUM. SH4 gave me that chance after two War Patrols as CO of USS TAMBOR. Newer commands have come along, but all the Admirals in Washington couldn't pry DRUM away from me.

I left Pearl for my second War Patrol as CO USS DRUM on May 29, 1942. My first Patrol was a dud. I spent more time in transit and dodging enemy air cover than I spent patrolling off Honshu. I was hoping for better luck this time. I got it in spades!

I arrived and refueled at Midway on June 1, 1942. After provisioning, I headed NW in a slow lazy route back to Honshu. The next day I received FOX traffic that the Battle of Midway was in full effect. Not knowing how accurate the game's history was, I set out searching for where I thought the enemy carriers and invasion force would be.

My God, I've never seen that many aircraft on radar...

It may not have been THE carrier force, but it was A carrier force. They were NE of me heading SE. I'd have to hustle, but maybe, just maybe I could get in front of them and darkness would be on my side. I figured, "what the hell" and ran my engines to their extremes. Even if I burnt every drop of fuel in the bunkers I was only a few hundreds miles from Midway. I could row if it meant flatops on the scoreboard.

After what seems like days, I finally got out about 20 miles in front of the task force. I used their approximate course and the ruler to draw out where they'd be and a then I drew an interception course that'd put me 2,000 yards off of their line of advance. I ran at flank speed to that spot, dove deep, manned battlestations, went silent, and waited.

I was a hole in the water waiting on the first destroyer picket to cover the 10 or so miles to my position. She drove along fat, dumb, and happy. She passed not 300 yards from my position without a peep! I'm in!

I ordered 3 knots and slowly started ascending to Periscope Depth. While I was waiting on that, I set all of my torps except for those in tubes 6 and 10 to high speed and set them for a depth of 25ft. I was going to hang onto those last two for snap shots at any DD's that dared come close enough. As soon as I passed 98ft I opened all the doors and gave some rudder orders based on passive sonor bearings.

At 70ft I popped the attack scope and waited on it to clear the surface. Jackpot! Three Shokakus and three Hiryus and a half-dozen CA's and CL's that now seem insignificant. Forget the reserves! Reset tubes 6 and 10!

The plan is simple: Two fish for each of the big flattops and if I'm lucky I can get turned around and two each for two of the baby flattops. Dive deep and run away as quietly as a can while reloading. Even if I can't sink them, maybe I can slow them down enough to stop airops and take them out of the fight, get away, report, and come back to finish any stragglers.

I start giving rudder orders and let loose with all six fish from the bow tubes and immediately start trying to turn away for a shot with the stern tubes. They still don't know I'm here, but they will soon!

All six fish find their marks. At 900 yards with perfect broadsides on the first two targets, how can you miss? There are secondary explosion after secondary explosion after secondary explosion. They know I'm here so I order flank ahead to finish the swing. Now there's a DD hammering down on me about 1500 yards away but I'm greedy at this point. I sent four fish at two of the baby flattops.

As soon as they clear the tubes I keep flank ahead and go deep to 300'. The DD is pinging wildly and before I can cross the thermal layer I get four more torpedo impacts! As soon as I cross the layer at 150ft, I reduce speed to 2 knots and pray that the sonar operators on the now swarming DD's are dumb. I set a course for the west to clear datum and switch to the external view to watch the DD's do their dance in the circle of death, but not before I watch all three big flattops and both baby flattops roll over and die! SCRATCH FIVE FLATTOPS!

I spend four hours deep watching what's left of the Task Force reform and turn back SE as I slowly slip away. With night now on us and the last DD finally turning to regroup with the Task Force, I surface to get off a contact report.

After berating myself for breaking my own rules and getting greedy, despite my luck, I figure I've bloodied Tojo's nose enough (116,000 tons worth!) for one day and give the Task Force a wide berth as I head back to Midway to resupply. After all, I've still got a mission to carry out.

On the way back to Midway I seriously considered calling it a patrol and heading back to Pearl. But, I figured what the hell. They're just going to send me right back out. It's not like they're going to transfer me and the DRUM to something nice and safe like fleet training or anything.

So after reprovisioning at Midway I make the long and lonly trek back out to Honshu. Outside of the omnipresent air cover and the endless strings of diving and surfacing to avoid them, the next two weeks are fairly uneventful. I managed to get a few lone coastal freighters under the cover of darkness with my deck gun. Nowhere near the excitement of that Task Force.

With the assigned mission objectives complete, I'm just killing time until my fuel dictates a return to Pearl. But, I sure hate the idea of returning with all 24 torpedoes so I do the customary runs on deep harbors along Honshu's east cost. I get lucky, pop a couple of DD's standing guard and even burn a few of my stern torpedoes when I manage to find two Large Tankers riding by the dock.

By all accounts, this is a history making War Patrol and I'll be at the top of the leader board by leaps and bounds, but it was just a case of being in the right place at the right time. I've now got just six torpedoes left in the bow tubes and two in the stern.

The fuel situation is okay, but I figure I'll give one last opportunity to make those torpedos count before I turn back towards Midway for fuel before heading home to Pearl. So, I head down towards Yokosuka and Tokyo. I figure I'll just poke my nose in and see what's down there.

The weather is definately not on my side down there. I head in at night but it's calm and flat with a giant moon in the sky. I pop a lone destroyer on the way in, but they know I'm there. Luckily, the AI is stupid and the destroyers can't get around the bend at Yokosuka. Three DD's kill themselves just driving up on the beach and their guns can reach me.

I send three of my five last bow torpedoes into a Mogami tied up to the pier at Yokosuka and what a time for duds! Two fail to explode despite hitting their target at good angles. I turn to leave and send my last two stern fish at the Mogami. One misses just ahead and strikes the pier (How'd I miss a stationary target!?!?) and the other hit the Mogami and sends up another big plume of water, but no secondaries. She lists over to starboard but refuses to sink.

With just one torpedo left for anything I might run into on the trip home and that Mogami's guns still active, I decide to stay submerged and slink out of the bay.

As leave the bay the weather finally cooperates and a storm front rolls in dropping daylight visibility to nothing. At least I won't have to worry about the Airdales on the way out.

A couple hours later Sonar reports a small Convoy along my line of advance. We'll intersect close enough where I can make it just by altering my course a little as the tracking party strengthens their plot.

After awhile I get close. Real close. They can't be more than a mile away, but due to the fog nobody can see ANYTHING.

The sonor plot looks like two warships and a merchant. One warship ahead, screening for any interlopers and one astern. I man battlestations and give all the guns the weapons free order just in case something big and mean pops out of the fog before I can dive. I make for the center of the formation hoping to get a visual on the merchant for my last torpedo. I've set it for high speed and depth of 20ft.

Just then, the prettiest dumb, fat, and happy gigantic European passenger liner pops out of the fog. My deck gun opens up on her and I realize I just told her escorts where I was. So, I ring up all ahead flank, turn, loose my one torpedo and dive for the bottom.

The torpedo strikes perfectly amidships, there's fire and secondaries, but she refuses to sink. Ah well... She's dead in the water and on fire, I'm alive, but with no more torps, and the DD's are hunting for me on the other side of her.

I ease away and slip off towards home. The rest of the trip was uneventful, but when I finally made it back to Pearl I had a nice shiny Valor medal for me and six Patrol Stars to give to my crew.

Today i ran into 2 destroyers off the coast of Honshu, they see me from way out, and turn full speed directly to me. Bad move. Dive to periscope depth, line up closest one on 0 and dumbfire 2 torps, he evades too late and i end up hitting the aft with one of them. "Shes going down sir!"

Okay so i dive to 550 but the other destroyer is pissed! Wont let me go and its been like an hour, keeps pinging me and she must have flown in some more depth charges because they kept coming.

Signal my radio man to play "We did it before and we'll do it again" on max volume, hoping it will be the last song the jap sonar man will hear while i hit flank and go back up to periscope depth, hoping i can line up for another salvo of dumbfires.

Raise perascope just in time to see a full view of the enemie's bow charging for me, i launch 2 torps knowing shes too close for them to go off, but whatever, I lower the scope just in time to get barely nicked by her belly, what a close call. How i evaded that next depth charge attack only god knows.

Dive down to 100 feet, still more charges going off all around. Im getting tired of it. Blow ballast and call battlestations, man the deck gun and fire 19 shells into her. Somehow i was blessed with being at the right angle to only take small(er) arms fire from her decks, while she just got pounded.

In the end we all lived up to the song my radioman played. We did it before and then we did it again!

End result, i was amazed to see, was 0 damage, not even my perescope was hurt, and when it was hit, the entire boat rocked!

Say goodnight!

How come all images via photobucket are now minimalised? And, is there a switch to return it to my original 800 pixels?
