I don't think there are any true subsims on the ipad yet, there is a rather arcadey Silent Hunter but it's nothing like the PC version in gameplay or strategic depth. The best bet will be Marc Hessburg's "Wolves of the Atlantic" which he has been working on for quite some time. He is set to release a cutdown fundraising version of the game featuring the SeeHund XXVIIB midget sub around Xmas time. Look out also for his first flight sim "1942 Wildcats over the Pacific" based on the same engine.

At the moment the best naval game is probably Pacific Fleet which is a kind of naval angry birds ie guess the shot angle trajectory. The developer Paul Sincock has obviously put a great deal of work into the title and has plans to expand it into a full blown naval sim.

Another rts naval strategy game is the wwii "Thunder Fleets" developed by Orator games it takes a 2D top down approach and features everything from PT-Boats to battleships.

The turn based Battle Fleet (ipad & mac) has also been doing well in reviews and may soon make its way to PC via Steam Greenlight

Longstanding Subsim member Martin Leidel (Sung) has developed "Sea Battle Pro" a version of battleship that stands out from the hundreds of other battleship clones on itunes in that it uses a hex based approach rather than the usual square tiles making the game a bit more varied & challenging than the traditional game. He also plans many additional features to the classic game including mines bombers etc. Martin/Sung also recently announced he is now at work on a future Pacific WWII Submarine game Silent Depth for IOS Android & Windows Phone.

Its also worth checking out the free titles developed by military forces such as the Royal Navy's Engineer Officer challenge and the two games developed by the Royal Australian Navy (DefenceJobs.gov.au) Navy Sink'em & Navy Warfare Officer.

If you are in the mood for something a bit more offbeat/fantasy based you could check out the steampunk inspired Crimson Steam Pirates which is quite fun and has a couple of add on scenario packs to extend the game.

If you enjoy age of sail type games Sid Meier's updated version of Pirates is also now available on iTunes although it is a definite battery hog. Another title worthy of consideration (especially since it's free) is the text adventure "Choice of Broadsides" which is heavily based on the Hornblower series of books by CS Forester.

As far a the merchant marine goes Rolf Deiter Klein's classic Amiga tycoon/sim game "Ports of Call" has also been ported over and although the graphics may now be showing their age a little it's still the rock solid game it always was. Ports of Call is also available on Android

If you enjoy the occasional arcade type naval experience you could try the Unity3D based HMS Destroyer though you are limited to firing guns with no control over helm or navigation. I found the controls a bit too slow on this one but still worth a look as it has a free lite version. Also available on Android

On Android only U-48 Submarine Commander is a rather simplistic but well realised little sub game taking place on a top down 2d map with periscope view when engaging targets.
