Never played it on Nintendo. It was the second sub sim I had on my PC Jr, though.

It was a bit better than Gato:

I played it on my Atari 500ST back in 1986. It was great for the time, Aces Of The Deep and Silent Hunter 1 blew it out of the water, and I never looked back. Well, I look back in memory, but...

Default Silent Service 1 and 2

Hey just found this thread. I used to play this on my Atari ST it was my first game and was the reason I bought the machine! I still play it on my Vista pc with all my old ST games, I found a program called STEEM on the web this emulates the ST machine on a PC. YOU CAN ALSO DOWNLOAD ALL THE ST GAMES FOR FREE AS WELL! Don't be a Gato h8ter.

Gato was cool...for its time. I played Silent Service on the PC, although the C-64 had better sound.

When Gato was all I had, I loved it. It was a hell of a lot better than the point and shoot torpedo games, and it's probably what got me started on submarines in the first place. I should go dig out the PC Jr and see if it can still boot. Have me some fun with Silent Service and Gato.

Default RE: Sid Meir's Silent Service

Yes! I played "Silent Service" when I had a Commodore 64 computer. You started out at either of two ports in Australia. While you could travel anywhere in the Pacific Ocean, I went to the Solomon Islands. I would torpedo the destroyers with a down-the-throat shot. Quite a difference between "Silent Service" and "Silent Hunter III", which I'm playing these days.

Silent Service on the Amiga (which is the definitive version where you may encounter proper warship convoys) still holds up surprisingly well. It may not have as many features as Silent Hunter or AOD but the realism is still high enough* to make the gameplay convincing from a tactical point of view. It also has some design elements that make it a better game than any other sub sim like the strategic transit map that allows you to get to the action quick without having to fiddle around with inadequate time compression like in SH.

*Not counting the deck gun that allows you to fire as fast as you can tap the G key, lol.

When I moved up to an Apple IIgs I replaced the older 8bit version of Silent Hunter with the IIGS 16bit version....thought I had died and went to subsim heaven Also played the hell out of SubBattle Simulator by Activision....I think it was the first subsim that gave you a choice between having a uboat career in the Atlantic or an American sub skipper in the Pacific. It is still amazing what they could get out of 800k.

I remember I was about 8 or so (I'm 31 now) and a friend had this game....well I played the heck out of it. I'd spend hours and hours just patrolling on the map. That was my first subsim experience. And looking back, it wasn't a real big deal then, but now it's a huge deal especially with these new subsims. It was a very innovative, well thought out game. In fact, I still have it.

Nothing like tearing apart Kaibokans and destroyers that are coming straight at you. :

I never did play the first one but I remember stealing the chair from my dad a couple of times when Silent Service 2 came out. I think thats what got me hooked to SH3 was the nostalgia of Silent Service 2, lol.
