After several hours he heads up to the conning tower and looks to the village. No lynching tonight, it seems.

He heads below again, locking the hatch as tight as he can on the way down. If anyone dies on this boat tonight, he thinks to himself, I owe Fräulein Grey an incredible apology.

"A sunday beef roast" she replied. "Would you like some?"
