Icon9 Having let the nuke-genii outta the bottle in 1945...

https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3xw...-collapse-soon

Scientists in the 1970s at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) created a method to determine when the fall of society would take place.

That method indicated the fall will be some point near the middle in the 21st century around 2040, and so far, their projections have been on track, new analysis suggests.

In 1972, a team of researchers studied the risks of a doomsday scenario, examining limited availability of natural resources and the rising costs that would subvert the expectation of economic growth in the second decade of the 21st century. Using a system dynamics model that was published by the Club of Rome — a Swiss-based global think tank that includes current and former heads of state, United Nations bureaucrats, government officials, diplomats, scientists, economists and business leaders — the scientists were able to identify the upcoming limits to growth (LtG) to forecast of potential “global ecological and economic collapse coming up in the middle of the 21st Century,” The Guardian reported.

The Earth, according to LtG, has been terraformed beyond repair by greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, making the next generation to endure the “heavy legacy,” a scarcity of mineral resources and a planet characterized by radioactive and heavy metal pollution.

In the ’70s, the study was considered controversial and sparked debate, with some pundits misrepresenting the findings and methods, according to Vice.

However, Gaya Herrington, Director Advisory, Internal Audit & Enterprise Risk at major accounting firm KPMG, updated the LtG model in a published finding in the Yale Journal of Ecology in November 2020.

In Herrinton’s estimates, the world’s population, industrial output, food and resources will rapidly decline. The 2100s will be comparable to the 1900s, according to Vice. However, Herrington is treating her research as a personal project as a precaution to see how well the MIT model holds up.

Herrington’s study concluded that society has about another decade to change courses and avoid collapse by investing in sustainable technologies and equitable human development.
We're right on schedule...ca:2040 Fortunately I will be beaming up to the mothership shortly

US secretly supplied Ukraine with ATACMS it used to strike air bases

Ukrainian forces used long-range ATACMS missiles for strikes on two air bases in the occupied cities of Berdiansk and Luhansk on the night of 16-17 October.
Source: The Wall Street Journal and Politico, citing "informed sources", as reported by European Pravda

According to the WSJ, over the last few days the US has secretly sent "a small number of missiles" to Ukraine. The sources do not disclose other details, but the modification of the ATACMS received by Ukraine was said to have a range of about 160 km.

Later, the media platform Noelreports posted a photo of missile wreckage on Twitter (X) that indicates that it was probably the MGM-140A ATACMS Block I, M39(A1?) type. https://twitter.com/NOELreports/stat...87721651523970

Earlier on 17 October, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces confirmed the strike on air bases in the temporarily occupied cities of Berdiansk and Luhansk, which caused the destruction of nine Russian helicopters with different modifications, an air defence launcher and an ammunition storage point... https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/10/17/7424525/

Does anyone know how big the destruction radius of one such missile is? I mean on an airbase fighters and helcioters would not be parked close side by side, but on launching pads and hangars siomnetimes dozens if not hundreds of meters part. I'm just curious, how many of these precious and rare missile did it take them to destroy nine helicopters, a SAM launcher and an ammo depot? 11 missiles? Or more to saturate defences?

I think 2-3 of these ATACMS would be enough if they are hitting the right spot at the airfield.

Ukraine has used US-supplied long-range missiles for the first time, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

His comments follow reports the weapons, known as ATACMS, destroyed nine helicopters at Russian bases in the east of the country. Ukraine has not confirmed the missiles were used.

Ukraine said an air defence system and other equipment were among the targets hit in Berdyansk and Luhansk.

Dozens of Russian troops were killed or injured in the operation, it added.

"They have performed very accurately. ATACMS have proven themselves," Mr Zelensky said in an evening address posted on social media, without giving details of when or where they were used.

Russia's military has not commented.

The Biden administration had previously refused to provide ATACMS to Ukraine, but had decided "in recent weeks" to send them quietly, US media outlet CNN reported, quoting two US officials.

It said that Washington wanted to take Moscow by surprise, in case Russia moved equipment and weapons out of reach before the projectiles could be used.

Because of concerns about tensions with Russia, the missiles provided to Ukraine have a lower range than the maximum the system is capable of, according to the Associated Press.

The variant delivered to Kyiv carries cluster munitions which release hundreds of small bombs from the air rather than a single warhead, AP reported.

Cluster munitions are controversial and are banned by more than 100 states due to their threat to civilians.

Vladimir Rogov, the Russian-appointed governor of the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia region, said air defence systems "successfully intercepted enemy rockets" over Berdyansk, adding that information about casualties and damage was being checked and would be provided later.

Kyiv taken by surprise after Russian offensive on Avdiivka!

The move took Ukraine and its Western allies by surprise. While Russia's military was thought to be on the back foot all along the 745-mile front line, it has for several days been carrying out a major counter-attack on Avdiivka.

Putin Says US Wading Deeper Into Ukraine War, Calls Missile Supplies a 'Mistake'!

The Kremlin chief said Washington's decision to supply the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), whose use Kyiv confirmed on Tuesday, "just prolongs the agony" for Ukraine.
"Firstly, this of course causes harm and creates an additional threat. Secondly, we will of course be able to repel these attacks. War is war," Putin said.

"But most importantly, it fundamentally lacks the capacity to change the situation on the line of contact at all ... This is another mistake by the United States."

Ukraine had repeatedly asked Washington for ATACMS to help it attack and disrupt supply lines, air bases and rail networks in Russian-occupied territory."A mistake of a larger scale, as yet invisible but still of great importance, is that the United States is becoming more and more personally drawn into this conflict. And let no one say that they have nothing to do with this. We believe they do," Putin said.

He noted that the United States had sent two aircraft carrier groups to the Mediterranean in response to the explosion of violence between Israel and the Palestinians, and said he had ordered Russian planes with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles to patrol over the Black Sea.

LOL surprised? Russia has lost five times more military equipment than Ukraine in its week-long assault on Avdiivka, Russia’s army has “run out of breath” this is all they got the most significant offensive operation since January with only result heavy equipment and personnel losses. Avdiivka is a heavily fortified city defended by 10,000 Ukrainian troops who threaten logistical lines in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region this is a trap and Russia walked into it

From what I have read-The Ukrainian knew they would try to take these areas. So Ukraine send disinformation to lure the Russian who toke the bait and walked right into the trap.

Can have remembered wrong though.

Cluster ammo warhead on those ATACMS, that answers my question. I thought they were conventional warheads. Range limit 160km. Well.

I often wonder whether the West really wants a Ukrainian victory and a Russian defeat. Bubble Olaf does not send Taurus and gave one explicit reason: these could be used to attack and brign down the Kerck bridge. Think of it. This carricature of a German chancellor obviously does not want Russian supply lines interdicted.
