So, the squirrel king collected taxes from all the 10 squirrel districts in his kingdom!
The districts had to pay 1000 nuts each.
But the king heard a rumor that one of the districts cheated, and that they've eaten a small piece of each nut.
The only way to seperate a real nut from a chewed nut is to weigh it.
A whole nut weighs 20 grams, and a slightly chewed nut weighs 19,5 grams.

The squirrel king has a bathroom scale at his disposal, but it is expensive to use, so he wants to use it as few times as possible.
How many times does he have to use the scale to figure out who cheated?

Just the once.

Once is correct!
But I'm sorry to say, that I need to know how he does it aswell!

10 districts.
The districts had to pay 1000 nuts each.
Makes 10.000 nuts.
20 grams per nut make 200000 grams, or 200 kilograms.

I am not sure how capable the king's bathromm scale is, but a scale for humans should be able to measure up to 200 kilogrms.

If a squirrel scale can only scale less, we have to divide the 200 kilograms through the scale's capability, to find out how often he has to use it.

Or not? I am easily fooled with mathematics
Or the question is wrong

He places one nut from each district on the scale until the scale reads x,5. The last nut placed is from the district that cheated.

Yes, pardon my bad translation of the riddle from Swedish to English.
Anyway, yes, the scale is super sensitive (shows grams) and it can easily take 200 kg.

What we know is that he only needs to use it once, since Jimbuna guessed correct.
And we know, all of the nuts it will not weigh 200kg in total, since 1000 nuts only weigh 19,5 grams per nut!

I hope the question is clearer now! Ask if what!

That counts as alot of measurments.
Only once is needed!

Does he have to weigh himself during this?

No, it is enough to weigh the nuts to figure out who cheated.

One hint, and then I will present the solution tomorrow.

So the king sits there with ten bags of nuts from ten districts, they all weigh 20kg except one that weighs 19,5.
Weighing all the nuts just shows 199,5kg, and no clue to who cheated. Weighing less nuts but equal amount from each District doesn't help either.

So there is no point to put the same amount of nuts from each district on the scale.

I need to know this... after all I don't want anyone messing with my nuts either... but I just can't figure it out. Is it a trick answer or a real mathematical solution? I just don't know, but I am thinking hard about it

Oh, I get it. It's one time because the king takes two nuts from the first district, four from the second district and so on and puts the resulting 110 nuts on the scale at once. Depending on the weight, he can see who cheated:

  • 2199 g and district 1 cheated
  • 2198 g and district 2 cheated
  • 2197 g and district 3 cheated
  • 2196 g and district 4 cheated
  • 2195 g and district 5 cheated
  • 2194 g and district 6 cheated
  • 2193 g and district 7 cheated
  • 2192 g and district 8 cheated
  • 2191 g and district 9 cheated
  • 2190 g and district 10 cheated

Excellent answer! And a bonus point for the solution to even the numbers!
