@Jim: Actually when googling for "Prototype locomotive" one of the first pictures is this: And the corresponding website claims it was installed in Britain, but the test track was localized in Massachusetts. I wonder, in the early age of moden industrial iron/steel forging metalurgy, which also prbably contributed to the 1912 Titanic disaster, how long those nearly 45 degree canted wheels could have held up in all temperatures on that contraption, rockin' and socken' on an elevated El track monorail?
