Yes it is particle board, covered with white paper/carton. And if it looks like that at both sides and is always 35 cm long it can't be skirting either ... no idea.

) by saying that it is not for a household task but instead is an aid in what has been a leisure pursuit for some, a more serious one for others

@ Catfish: If you study my last photo closely you'll see that there's a thin plywood base encompassed by the paper. The dark brown material to which it is laminated is not particle board, not is it chipboard or MDF

The photo is far too blurred, but ok.
So is it soft board/softboard/soft fibre board, on the plywood base?
Would be "Weichfaser-Platte" in german. I don't even know if it's made of wood fabric or cardboard fibres

I guess i'm out

Nope, looks pretty clear to me, old boy... and it's none of those. But don't be disheartened... I'll give you another clue: you used the word 'soft' several times there. It is soft and this is crucial to its use
