I just watched The Amazing Spider-Man. I was one of those who avoided it because the reboot came just a couple of years after the third in the original series, and because I thought the original was excellent.
I was very pleasantly surprised. Not only is the new version fantastic, but in some ways I thought it was better than the original. The backstory is more in line with the comics, and the script, direction and acting were all great. I highly recommend it. Quote:

I also put Die Hard in that category. The main character in the book just happened to be the US Government's formost anti-terrorist specialist. Making him an ordinary cop and a "fish out of water" made the movie for me. In each succeeding film he gets a little more "super" and I stopped after the second.

Seems they made the right move in the film.

Have you seen the other somewhat recent Cruise scifi movie?
Oblivion? That one was good also.

Last night I watched X-Men: Days of Future Past. I liked it. They made it so X-Men 3 never happened. While that might make some angry, the "ret-con" (Retroactive Continuity) is a fairly common device in the comics, and I liked that Jean Grey and Scott Summers are alive and well. "Nobody Stays Dead" is something else common to the comics. I also liked that they got the original actors back for most of the parts.

Watched the original Thing called..The Thing from another world, not very good. The 1982 remake was better, but hey it was the first time I saw it. Seen better sci-fi from the 1950's.

I remember how offended fans of the original were by the remake, and I have to agree with you. One thing a lot of people don't know is that the real original was a 1938 novella written by John W. Campbell, Jr. called 'Who Goes There?' The remake was a lot closer to the story and a far better film.

I may be wrong if these are not 1950's but I did like Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

No, you're right. They were both made in the '50s and they were both great. Same for War of the Worlds. It was far from the book but the soul was still there and it was also a fine movie.

The "dumb blonde" was played by Judy Holliday, who reportedly had a genius level IQ in real life. She first played the role in the long-running Broadway play (from which the film was adapted) to rave reviews but the studio bosses initially refused to cast her in the movie version. Some of the creative folks at the studio decided to give her a prominent role in the film Adam's Rib alongside Spencer Tracy and Kate Hepburn in order to help "prove" that she was worthy of the lead in Born Yesterday. It worked. She ended up winning both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for her work in Born Yesterday in a year chock full of great leading actress performances. (For starters, she won the Oscar over Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard as well as Bette Davis and Anne Baxter in All About Eve, and if you haven't seen those two movies you need to take care of that ASAP. ) William Holden played the reporter/tutor/love interest and Broderick Crawford played the gangster dude. Great performances by both of them as well. This is one of those movies that it seems like the general public is barely aware of these days, despite it being a total treasure and real hoot to watch. If you like classic movies or just good movies, it's a must-see film IMO. |

Thanks so much for that: I wasn't expecting a resolution to this overmuch; I had an idea it was William Holden co-starring. Judy Holliday! Genius! I've placed her into the "Beautiful Women" thread for us, and I'm not at all surprised to learn that she was not "dumb", either. I haven't seen "Sunset Boulevard" for years and years, and I do know "All About Eve"... I knew I'd seen her in something else!
