Just want to be sure; do I have to reinstall the game before I patch. Sounds unnecessary to me. Cant I just install the 1.4 patch directly? (I have 1.3 now...) It works this way with almost every other game...

yes, you install the 1.4 patch over whatever version you're running (1.0, 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3)

Many thanks! Thought it was like that. But you guys are the expert on SH4 so it is best to ask first...

Great news!!

I haven't had time to play with SH4 for several months as I have been out at sea in real life, working on my USCG Masters License and my sailing instructor's credentials, successfully, I might add.

It has been rather fun playing with all of my real world chart tools and plotting DR, running fixes, set and drift, etc. All of that practice can only help my torpedo targeting in the SH4 world.

Note to the DEV Team....add tides and tidal currents and ocean currents in patch 1.5 as a difficulty level setting in order to affect torpedo tracks in and around straits and harbors....

Now that 1.4 is released, I am looking forward to some stormy weather so I can spend some time on the computer. The WX here in Florida has been really excellent with very few days on which I have been unable to get out on the water.

Even the cold fronts that have moved through have been rather mild and not too breezy to sail. That usually changes in December when we actually get some cold weather and I will have to put on a sweater

Oh, and I have found an excellent way to simulate life aboard a diesel boat! It requires one to have their own boat with a diesel engine. I set up my laptop at the nav station, which is right over the diesel fuel tank, great for residual diesel odor.
Then I start SH4 and when I am on the surface in the game, I run the diesel engine on board my boat and do a battery charge. Clonking my head on the overhead while going through passageways on the boat also adds to the effect. Maybe I should install a periscope on the sailboat, what do you think? I could use it to get relative bearings and plot attack profiles on my manuevering board.

Oh great, now I've got another project for the boat, Add Periscope and Radar....

Downloading now.......

Default looks like I will FINALLY buy a copy

I can still find plenty copys at my local stores - their boxes are dust covered. When this train wreck first appeared I visited all the sites about SH4 and quit counting the gripes about it when the count got over 50. So I figured I'd wait until modders had a chance to do something with it and until SH4 1.4 came out - which I must admit I thought WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. But it has!

Bad Download?

I would suggest that you turn off any and all sypware and antivirus and firewalls and then REDOWNLOAD the game again. You probably got a bad copy of the patch.

Then completley delete the old game and check the registry for copies of the files too. Sometimes programmers don't make the auto game delete program remove all the files they put on your computer. So it doesn't hurt to check the registery.

Now reinstall the game from the original CD and then install the newly downloaded 1.4 patch.

If that doesn't work or help then I don't know what else to tell you.

Might make a back up copy of the mods before you do all the above.

I can get to the game menu, but it's constantly freezing, and there are also graphical anomalies in the back ground such as flashing black lines.

Help would be very much Apprieciated.

The signifigantly reduced loading times in itself make this patch worthwhile.

Default Reboot after installing any new program or after uninstalling programs

It's a good idea to reboot your computer after unintalling a program and before installing something new. Rebooting is good insurance that the temp files are removed. If not you may have to go into the hard drive and find all the *.tmp files and remove them manually.

Defrag is a windows XP feature. It's in the start /all programs/ accessories/system tools/ system defragmenter .

I just uninstalled SH4, but I'm going to hold off reinstalling and patching until tomorrow. Hopefully it works or I'll have to revert back to 1.3.

But 1.3 is better than nothing...

I'm also planning to get SH3. I was actaully getting it a couple weeks aga, I went to future shop, they said they had 2 left. Searched the shelves and couldn't find it

The add-on has even more optimisations.
