I love the Type II's despite their limited range. Small, hard to detect, and if one is lucky, they can give a punch
Here are some pics from last mission Leaving Kiel for AN 51 ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us After 2 days, the weather turned for the worst. Patrolling submerged as visibility was zero, my hydrophone guy spots a merchant. Positioning the boat at for 90degree shot from 400m, impact pistols. 2 torpedoes and the Ore Carrier goes down ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us Convoy report. Large convoy approaching. Depth around the area around 130m. Conference with my WO and we decide to go for it. Weather turns for the better. Attacking position at 3Km away from convoy. 2 topredoes launched, medium cargo hit ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us Evasion tactics. Turn towards escorts, depth at 100m, silent running. Got pinged a bit but no runs or depth charges. Type II is too small for their comfort ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us We wait until all ships are out of hydrophone range. We Surface and turn towards our home port. We arrive at Kiel. As usual, Marlen and the rest of the nurses welcome us back. Cant wait to hit the bar ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Again U-8 makes way towards grid AN 51 and everybody is in the lookout for ships.
![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us A tramp steamer is spotted later in the afternoon. Weather is perfect. From periscope depth, U-8 fires two torpedoes, 1 Magnetic pistol, 1 Impact, just to make sure. Type II's dont have a deck gun so no easy "coup de grace" in case she's a tough nut ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us Hydrophones spot another merchant. Plotted course, brought boat at a 90 degrees at 800m BUT she's NORWEGIAN a freaking neutral. My trigger happy WO urges me to shoot as she is blackened and just 30 miles of the East coast of England, but I my conscious prevails and we let her go. ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us Watch Officer is fuming and to let some steam off, he orders Bernard to sweep the floor of the engine rooms with a toothbrush. Thankfully 2 hours later the next contact is not a neutral. Its a Polish Large Merchant heading towards Hartlepool. WO forgets all about bernard and insists he calculates the solution. I agree. Two torpedoes did the trick once again. WO insists we surface so he can sing his lucky rodeo tune to celebrate the success. I oblige ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us With 1 torpedo in the tubes we make way towards Kiel. Plan is to arrive on Christmas day. And YES we make it. Docking at Kiel on Christmas day! Ah these are happy times. Even the seagulls on the right seems to be walzing ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us
