Any old timers remember Kincheloe Air Force Base, MI?

When it was getting ready to be deactivated in 1977, Michigan Department of Corrections was considering building, what would be named, Kinross Correction Facility on the base site. As part of the planning, the MDC inspected the barracks that were currently being used to house SAC troops for consideration for use for the minimum security prisoners.

The MDC ruled that they would not be allowed to put prisoners in these same barracks until they were renovated. Barracks that were good enough for enlisted SAC troops were not good enough for state prisoners.

MDC decided it was cheaper to built a new facility for Kinross than to try and renovate the old barracks at Kincheloe.

Kinross opened in 1978 one year after Kincheloe closed.

At RAF Brize Norton there is one barrack block with room for a 2'6" wide bed, a small table, small sink and a tiny bit of wardrobe/shelving - it's tiny, you can touch both walls! One guy phoned the RSPCA and gave the measurements of the room and asked if it was OK to keep a pig in it...

"If you do we'd seek to prosecute you! "
