I hope the hurricane moves a bit more out to sea. If a real disaster ever hit DC, they are .. well the forum rules prevent me from typing it.
Somebody pls blow Irene to the easternly course.

Place you bets which general direction Irene is headed to
1. N
2. NW
3. NE
4. E
5. SE
6. S
7. SW
8. W
9. NW
10. Vegas.
11. Mexico.
12. Venezuela because Chavez is a hurricane magnet.
13. Hollywood because it could use the publicity.
14. You're unsure which to bet so you bet this.

Joke aside that storm is gigantic. Hope everyone evacuates to safety wherever that be. Living in equatorial is advantageous I guess since the weather is a lot calmer.

Nah, it's only a category 3 and they say it'll be down to a Category 1 by the time it gets to my neck of the woods.

Katrina was a Cat three when she made landfall at Louisiana. It's the storm surges I'm concerned about.

What a year in NC, tornadoes, minor earthquake, first one I felt in my life and here comes the hurricane.

Hopefully it won't spawn too many tornadoes.

With my vacation to the Outer Banks on hold (at least until Monday, Lord willing), I've gone into full preparedness mode. This is an activity that usually provides my family with boatloads of amusement because, as I was reminded by daughter #4 this morning: "You do all this stuff and then nothing ever happens." The idea that "nothing ever happens" might be the direct result of my "doing all this stuff" doesn't appear to occur to her (or her sisters and brothers). For this I sent them to college?

Army helo's have been flying over my house all day, I assume they're from Cherry Point, maybe Bragg, not sure where they're headed, flying NW. I heard they were moving them.

Bands are rolling in,

I think it's a reasonably safe bet she's not headed anywhere near Utah.

On a serious note, thanks for the updates from the folks actually affected. It's good to know you're all okay so far.

It's a safe bet the Outer Banks will not be accessible on Monday. The surge not only takes down homes and trees it carries debris such as sand, seaweed and boats! This being said clean up usually requires bulldozers, wreckers and landfill dumpsters. When Galveston was hit no one was permitted to go on the outer beach front for weeks. Also, the water system sometimes get polluted with everything under the sun.

before and after shots:

This might be the reality of the Outer Banks. Might think of another plan for the family just in case.
