U-35 searches for survivors amidst the wreckage of a rather volatile Passenger/Cargo, shortly before this shot was taken a large explosion had damaged the front of the boat. Fortunately the damage was light and easily repaired. Survivors from the Passenger/Cargo were rounded up and placed on life-rafts, given food, drink, a map and a compass as well as directions on the nearest landing point (Scotland). When clear of the wreck, U-35 then radioed openly about the sinking and dived swiftly to avoid any radio counter-detection.

They're called 'Barrage Balloons'. The idea is that low-flying enemy planes will wreck themselves on the wires. They were scattered all over cities and ports during the war, with extra wires strung between them.
