Anybody know if the escorts in GWX are actually intelligent enough to deduct your location based on torpedo bubble trails? I mean, they know that you are there when stuff starts exploding...so if they see the wakes they know a few seconds earlier, right? Not even enough time for them to change their shorts.
If an escort sees your torpedo trails, is he programed to follow them back to you? Or are they just going to default to "look for the bad guy" mode?

Actually Yak, I have yet to see ships react to the bubble trail. I've missed with steam torpedoes (against merchants, DD, and BB), and none of them seem to react to the bubble trail.

This is absolutely not true. Try attacking a convoy or any ship in daylight with a steamer. For me.. they always spot the bubble trail and freak out and then follow the trails right to where they were fired from. I can never seem to hit a ship with a steamer unless I'm at point blank range pretty much. Electric is another story. They don't go as far or as fast, but the targets don't see them and freak out. Also, they seem to only get a general idea of where they come from so often they will go off in an assumed direction that may or may not be where I am, but they take a good guess judging by where the explosions occured.

The only time I've had marginal luck with steamers from any distance away was at night in calm waters when the ships have their lights off.

If your firing from a ranfe of 1500 metres or closer, merchants should never be able to get out of the way of a T1 :hmm:
Provided of course, your accurate enough in your targetting technique

Man, this thread is just a necroposting magnet. But I still stand with my original thoughts that I had two years ago that steam is definitely the best.

Interesting... any ideas why ships never freak out for me?

I think the manual targeting mode has something to do with this. I tried the torpedo training mission with and without the manual targeting mode. The first ship is stopped, and when you fire a torpedo with manual targeting enabled, the ship starts moving to avoid the torpedo. With manual targeting mode disabled the ship doesn't move and stays in one spot.

I use the 10.5cm deck gun. I fight it out against Flowers, and armed trawlers.

Sounds like you might have figured it out, as I use auto targeting. I wonder why there is a difference, as its still possible to miss with auto :hmm:

I've always had a problem with the electric fish. They either go off early or not at all. Now the steam fish, they're like a Craftsman Tool: Satisfaction Guaranteed!

For me personally, I like using the deck gun with HE shells...I feel like a marauding pirate when I spot a ship on the horizon and go in for the kill at 17 kts full-speed ahead. I can only imagine the fear that resonates with my name on the North Sea

Earlier i prefered using electric, but since then i gradually came to use the steamers.Ofcourse i ceep electric on board but since i attack convoys at night the shorter time to reach the target is a plus !

Steam for night attacks, electric for day, deck gun for coup de grace if safe enough to do so.
