my grandfather is an (unofficial) instructor and somewhere in the black belt range, in the northwestern Illinois area. It sounds like the martial art has a very tight-knit group (as it should be) but since I took relatively informal classes at the local park district center (before moving on to some more effective fighting methods a-la USMC) this is probably just an outsider-looking-in thing
