I said Salmon/Sargo class because I can't find a single pic of a Gato with the AA gun pedestal ahead of the tower, but almost every picture I find of a Salmon/Sargo class has one. That class also has the right shape conning tower (widens at the bottom, notice most Gato's were skinnier and pretty much perpendicular to the deck)

Okay, I'm done, perhaps we should create a thread in the main SH4 section to delve through pictures and critique classes and tower builds.

Didn't mean to criticize.....Knew I'd seen the picture before and didn't think it was Seadragon. Sure would like to see a picture of the 'Pirate Submarine' though. In living color! Cool pictures of the Fleet Boats are getting really hard to find these days. I'm glad navsource.org exists to keep a record of them. I'm no expert but I sure like the way those old boats looked. beats the heck out of the U-boats imho!

but there are a couple of oddities that I noticed in this picture.

1. notice the rudimentary spray deflector just under the deadlights? it looks like the boat came like that right off the ways. I never noticed that before, but I do remember reading that early war conning towers varied slightly but most experts could tell you which yard the boats were built just by taking a close look at the tower.

2. is that a water-cooled machine gun up there on the deck?!

3. look at that cable the sailor is holding onto. from the looks of it the cable isn't attached to a mast farther up the deck (like it is on my 1/72 Gato model) but, instead, maybe somewhere on the deck on either side (see the other cable, they aren't converging to a single point)

4. I'm led to believe it's salt water corrosion, because I don't think any other classes of boats were painted white, other than the V-boats, and judging by the picture, it could only be a Cachalot class, but since the fairwater has been cut down (also, the periscope shears are missing their plating,) I can use the railing to judge if it is and it's not.

So judging by that picture, you have either a
Sargo class
or possibly
a P-class.

after about 45 minutes of research I can't find a similar cabling configuration, though.

(wow, would you lookit that, I just went into a Fleet Boat dissertation over just a picture. History Channel, I'll be expecting your call)
This Perch photo seems to have the cabling.

Getting closer with Trout. Note the shape of the conning tower and bridge.

not as much difference and variation in U-boats. Not like the fleet boats. when you click from a 1941 U-boat to a 1943 U boat, you see an added Flak Gun.

1941->1943 fleet boat...cut down fairwater, removed peri shear plating, removed forward deadlights and a flak gun deck added, up-gunning. there's just a lot there for a techni-junkie like me to pore over.

@Buddahaid, that pretty much looks the part, it's hard to tell though.

It does seem to be a Portsmouth style based on Trout, but I haven't found that photo yet in Navsource. Do you have a link?

I hope this setup will allow me to play RFB/RSRD... looks as though everything is there : twin guns, .50 Ma Deuce etc...

@ Jan Kyster : very nice picture !

Look under Fleet Submarines then scroll down to SS-237 USS Trigger

http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/0823712.jpg

I noticed that SS-228 USS Drum has a similar Antenna arrangement also. I'll bet when those radios were broadcasting those antennae would give you a jolt! Don't think I'd hang on it!

Well now I'm really confused as that picture is not there when I look at Trigger.

Sorry bout that! Okay when you go to the Trigger page, you'll see the Ship's logo (a triggerfish with a six shooter) Ship's Name & number and the Stars & Stripes. Under that there is a semophore/radio call sign for that boat and just under that it says: to additional pages. Click on Active Service-Loss and go down about halfway. Can't Miss it.

I hope to have it ready for testing by the weekend. The big thing is getting everything merged with RFB and making sure it's all working like it should.

Get ready for 2-minute dives!
