Na na na nuh naugahyde..
Devo 1974, when they were transitioning from graphic arts into music. Things to note: "Jungle Jim" Mothersbaugh and his (homemade) electric drums, pre- Alan Myers. Jerry Casale likes to talk a lot. Bob1 Mothersbaugh already played a mean guitar and (I think?) was still in a top-40 cover band. Bob2 Casale was also playing top-40 and hadn't joined the band yet. |

I saw Devo live the first time when they did their first ever Los Angeles show back in the 70s; they were part of the bill in a punk show held in a low rent social hall more used to hosting Eastern European wedding receptions, etc., than punk shows; I'll never forget the looks of horror on the hall staff as the night progressed... The social hall was one of several sites used by the LA punk culture since the main, original venue, The Masque, which was located in the basement of a Hollywood Blvd. porno theater, was closed down by the authorities; shows were held in several halls, often places like Elks, Moose, VFW halls, etc., but the tenure rarely lasted beyond a single night with either the halls' management or the authorities banning any re-bookings; the first Devo show was no exception. Everyone in the punk circles had heard Devo played on the radio or had some of their records and anticipation was high. However, Devo was really not prepared for the hardcore nature of the local punk scene and their set was a sort of battle between the spitting punks and the terrified-for-their-lives band members; at the end of the set, Mark Mothersbaugh declared in a rage from the stage that Devo would never, ever play in Los Angeles again... ...a short-lived declaration; a young girl in the audience, who came from a very wealthy family, was about to have a birthday and her daddy offered a rather large sum of money to Devo to play at the girls' party; Devo had a new appreciation for playing live in LA... Mention was made in previous posts of Japanese guitars and I was reminded of a particular guitar that I lusted after in my late teens; it was a monster of a guitar made in Japan and marketed under the name St. George; it had four (4 !!!) pickups and a unique pickup selection system: The picture above is of one of the several variations of the setup and is the one I saw of the model I wanted; the thumb-wheels are the volume controls, the '"Mic" rocker switches turn on and off each pickup and, IIRC, "R,S" rockers affected the tone; I never did get that guitar and I wonder what it would have sounded like... <O>

"Mix-master" controllers. So-named because they were also used in counter-top blenders. Trust me, you didn't miss anything. Those rocker switches were very loud and "poppy" and were prone to wearing out after a couple of months. They were also designed for A/C power. |
