The US says "serious negotiations" are taking place on a new Gaza truce and the release of more Israeli hostages.
But prospects remain uncertain after Hamas's leader reportedly rejected the idea of a temporary pause during talks in Cairo on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Israeli forces say they’ve uncovered a network of tunnels in the heart of Gaza City with entrances connected to the houses of Hamas leaders. On Wednesday, the Hamas-run Gaza government said 20,000 people had been killed there since Israel launched its military campaign against the group. And the UN Security Council again postponed a meeting to discuss calls for "urgent humanitarian pauses" in Gaza. A draft resolution by the United Arab Emirates also called for the return of hostages and a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians. Israel began its campaign in Gaza after Hamas broke through the heavily-guarded perimeter with Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, some of whom have been freed. |

The US has expressed support for the UN's latest draft resolution on humanitarian aid for Gaza - a vote for which is expected later today.
The original draft called for a sustainable cessation of hostilities, but the final version calls for creating the conditions for one. It comes as the World Food Programme says Gaza is at risk of famine within six months if the conflict doesn't end. Meanwhile, Hamas says Palestinian groups have rejected the prospect of further hostage releases until Israel agrees to end the war in Gaza. More than 240 Israeli hostages were captured during Hamas's 7 October attacks, with more than 100 of them released in a truce last month. On Wednesday, the Hamas-run Gaza government said 20,000 people had been killed in the enclave since the war erupted. Israel began its offensive after Hamas fighters crossed the border, killing 1,200 people. |

The Egyptian proposal ignores Israel's intention to weed out Hamas' political and military structures for Gaza once and forever. Hamas still launches rockets and missiles at Israel EVERY DAY.
If I were Israel, I would play the game even tougher. I would refuse Hamas negotiations, instead offer a deal to the world: For every lets say 15 trucks of aid, one hostage is to be freed. No hostage free - no aid goes in. I would starts with a low number like for example ten, and then allow getting "negotiated" upwards" to for example 20 trucks per hostage, if there even would be negotiations. The point is: this way the blame for no aid going into Gaza is reflected back onto Hamas if they do not agree. There is also a chance, althoigh irrationality is the rule in that region, that the people would start to turn against Hamas. It would take the wind out of many internationall voices' sails. It should also be refused by the West to spend money on reconstruction and for aid into Gaza, or the West Joran area. After all, the plac i s not Europe, but the orient, the Middle East. The Arab nations are stinking rich, and although they dispise Palestinians and see them like Westerners see gypsies, they nevertheless opportunistically use them to set up a morally blackmailing game to set up pressure against the West and Israel. Let the Arabs pay for thei dear brothers and sisters. And if they don't, than we hold the mirror up to them. Oh wait, there is the political left and the academic antisemitic elites endlessly preventing this. Heck, guess we are screwed... So, more Westeren self-mortification. We are weak spineless dwarves - und das kotzt mich nur noch an.
