There are fewer than 10,000 people in hospital with coronavirus in the UK, the latest figures show - similar to the numbers of Covid patients being cared for on NHS wards at the end of October.

Daily new Covid admissions have been declining since mid-January and now stand at 590, as of 5 March. At the peak of this latest pandemic wave they surpassed 4,500 in one day.

Up to four adults from two different households will be able to meet outdoors in Scotland from Friday of this week.

Restrictions on young people will also be eased, with four people aged between 12-17 able to meet even if they are all from different households.

Hospitals in and around Paris have been told to reduce non-Covid treatments by 40%, amid extensive demand for intensive care beds.

Hollywood star Michael Sheen has been "laid low" after contracting coronavirus.

There were also 5,766 new infections recorded in the last 24 hours.

These figures are down on those from Tuesday of last week when 343 deaths and 6,391 positive cases were reported.

A total of 22,592,528 people have received their first Covid vaccination in the UK and 1,181,431 have had their second dose.

The R0 for the ordinary Corona virus is 1.0 and the R0 for the British mutation is 1.14 here in Denmark(80 % of the positive test had this mutation).

The Danish government is planning on open the country even more. Something with the kids are allowed to attend school from next Monday.

They said a lot more about this corona and our restrictions.

During the minister of health speech I suddenly recall the situation in Portogal and Britain.

Some month ago their R0 was very low-they opened op and then came this British mutation.

MPs say NHS Test and Trace appears to have failed to achieve its stated aim of preventing lockdowns in England.

The Public Accounts Committee said its £37bn budget was "unimaginable" and warned the taxpayer could not be treated like an "ATM machine"

But Boris Johnson defends the programme, saying it has helped reopen schools.

The PM also defends the proposed 1% pay rise for NHS staff, adding that the government had already boosted nurses' starting pay.

A fresh row has broken out between the UK and the EU over exporting vaccines made in the UK

European Council President Charles Michel wrongly claimed the UK had an "outright ban" on exports of jabs.

Health systems in most of Brazil's largest cities are close to collapse due to Covid-19 cases, a report warns.

Globally, there have now been more than 117 million recorded cases of Covid-19, and 2.6 million deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

A further 231 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, and there were 5,766 new infections recorded in the last 24 hours.

A further 190 deaths of people who had tested positive for coronavirus within the previous 28 days have been recorded in the UK, the government's daily figures show.

This takes the total number of deaths using that measure to 124,987.

There were also 5,926 positive cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

This is down from last Wednesday when there were 315 deaths and 6,385 positive cases reported.

The number of patients in intensive care has reached a new high in the Czech Republic, as several Central European countries struggle with a new wave of the virus.

Czech authorities have started to send patients to Poland for treatment, as its facilities struggled to cope.

In Hungary the number of cases in the current wave has surpassed the previous peak in December and it has one of the highest recent fatality rates in the world.

Cases are also on the rise in Poland, where the government recorded the highest number of daily cases since late November on Wednesday, with 17,260 new infections.

The EU has been widely criticised for the slow pace of immunisations, and initial delays were partially blamed on Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca failing to supply doses to member states.

Brazil's hospitals are "close to collapse", with more than 80% of intensive care unit beds occupied in most state capitals, according to its leading health institute.

China has not reported any symptomatic Covid-19 cases for more than two weeks, and has discharged all of its remaining asymptomatic patients. The only "silent carriers" now in quarantine are people who have arrived from overseas.

The World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared Covid-19 a pandemic one year ago today.

Since then, there have been more than 116 million cases and 2.5 million deaths across nearly 200 countries.

The US has the highest number of deaths, with 522,818 now recorded.

Brazil, badly hit by the pandemic, recorded more than 2,000 deaths in a single day, taking its total to 268,370

More than 150 million doses of vaccine have now been administered.

In the UK, politicians in Northern Ireland are discussing a full return to school.

Research suggests cancer patients are less protected against Covid-19 than other people after one dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

An early second dose appears to boost cancer patients' protection, and cancer charities are calling for a review of the UK's vaccine strategy.

Denmark has suspended use of one batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine after a woman died from blood clots. Another person, who received a jab from the same batch ABV5300, was also hospitalised with clots.

Germany’s third wave of Covid has already begun, according to RKI public health agency head Lothar Wieler, and he says he’s very worried. Infections are up on last week - 14,356 in the past 24 hours – and Mr Wieler says there’s a race to get people vaccinated with the finish line is in sight.

Estonia begins a new month-long lockdown today with schools largely moving online. Non-essential stores are shut and a new 2+2 rule has come into force, allowing up to two people to move around together at a distance of two metres from others.

The EU’s medicines agency EMA is set to approve a fourth vaccine today across all 27 states. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires only one dose.

There’s bad news for music fans in Germany and Switzerland where promoter Eventim Live says seven big music festivals will not take place this summer, including Rock am Ring at Nürburgring. Meanwhile, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic says she’s speechless that one of the country’s biggest bands, Crvena Jabuka (Red Apple), have held two gigs in Belgrade. She says it was “against all rules and measures”.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has asked for the country’s state of emergency to be extended until 31 March as ministers prepare to approve plans for a gradual lifting of lockdown. The lockdown has been in place since mid-January but daycare and nurseries could start reopening next week.

https://www.icn.ch/news/covid-19-pan...rent-shortages

Quote:
A year on since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, a new International Council of Nurses (ICN) survey reveals that nearly one in five of its National Nursing Associations (NNAs) surveyed report an increase in the number of nurses leaving the profession. 90% of them are ‘somewhat or extremely concerned’ that heavy workloads, insufficient resources, burn-out and stress are the factors that are driving that exodus. WHO has confirmed the mass trauma of healthcare workers, highlighted by ICN in January.

In germany this issue was reported on national levels a few days ago, thousands of nurses have left the German health care sector. For Germany, which already is very short on nurses, this becomes an increasing problem. And politicians, since years being told there is crisis looming, just babbled and still babble, but do not seriously do anything on the nurses' situation already before Corona.

There is so much phlegmatism in Germany. It was complaien dbaout that the schools are ill-equipped for digital home learning. When the lockdown came, there would have been another (!) chance to increase ambitions an measures there, also to equip classrooms with alternative air suppy concpets, filtering, whatever. But when the kids returtned to school, conditons had not chnaged one bit in these regards. Like the years before, the alst motnhsd and year also have been passively wasted. But a coinbference (another one) has been announced to discuss the issue (as if it would be the first one).

The government is on so many levels guilty of refusal to work. Everythign moves like being placed in stiff, glibbery jelly that pushes every movement you make back into its starting position. And who knows, many political decision makers seem to have "rubberized" yellyfish inside their heads as well.

One in 270 people estimated to have had Covid last week in England, one in 365 in Wales, one in 320 in Scotland and one in 310 in NI

Overall one in 280 people in the UK thought to be infected - down from one in 230 the week before.

Wales's First Minister Mark Drakeford is setting out a detailed timetable for easing restrictions in his lunchtime news conference.

In Wales from Saturday 13 March, four people from two different households will be able to meet up outdoors to socialise, including in gardens.

Outdoor sports facilities will also be able to reopen in Wales and designated solo visitors will be allowed to enter care homes.

"Stay at home" guidance will become "stay local" from Saturday, Mark Drakeford says.

Wales will also allow hairdressers to open from Monday 15 March for appointments only - but non-essential retail remains closed until 12 April.

Scotland has increased the number of people who can meet outside, including in private gardens, allowing four adults from two households to gather.

Scotland to hold minute's silence on 23 March, marking one year since the country's first lockdown began.

US President Joe Biden has said he will order states to make vaccines available to all adults by 1 May, as he aims to declare "independence" from the virus by 4 July.
