I couldn't even take a shower without peeking over my shoulder at least once after watching Jaws

One time I went swimming at night with some buddies off Long Beach Island. I was a better swimmer than them and I struck out to about 100 yds to enjoy the swells.

Something 'bleeping' nudged me! I've struck things in the water before, little pieces of garbage, a small wood plank... you know 'stuff'. This was different. I have no idea to this day what it was, but I swam as fast as a torpedo to the beach. It's been the only time I can honestly say I was truly scared in the water.

That'd be pretty unpleasant. Good thing you were close to the beach and not left behind in the middle of the ocean like those divers who were never found.

It's only got 3 stars on Amazon for being low budget and a few other minor gripes, but I thought it was good.
I can't remember the name but I saw a scary one set in a German trench in WWI when some Tommies sacked it and then get murdered one by one by something really creepy that is never really explained.

Remembered. It's called Deathwatch.

One of my friends at work had an "interesting" experience surfing. He felt the water pressure pushing on his board and saw a large shadow under him for a brief moment. What it was? Your guess is as good as mine.

Halloween, the original.

Exorcist

The Blob, saw it on Creature Feature (memories).

Evil Dead series esp 1. 2 becomes comedic.

The plotline of one of the 28 ... later movies I remember to be absolutely absurd. Something to do with a guy kissing his infected wife, and starting the whole thing again and destroying Britain...

Will we see a 28 decades later? 28 milleniums?

My own nomination qualifies as more of a "creepy" film, than a true horror movie. But not least because, at the time it was made, it was based on what was known...then...of a very TRUE story, a good part of which was still quite vague.

"Sole Survivor (1970)"

This was a US "made for TV" movie, based on the the very true story of a "lost" (and later found) B-24 bomber, the "Lady Be Good."

Sole Survivor substitutes a B-25 for the B-24, and floats a rather unique premise atop that.... Well worth seeing if you can find it*--a real cult classic.

My own favorite scene is when Brad David ("Elmo") suddenly rears up and says: "they're....they're TOUCHING me!" (memory mine, and I'll leave the explanation for those who take the time to see the film).

Note: To sit through this one, you'll also have to be willing to put up with some early "William Shatner." Sorry, but there it is. It's the price you'll have to pay.

Regardless, I think the film, overall, is still WELL worth it.

[* "Roberts Hard to Find Videos" sells it for $25 or so (VHS, US format)]

------------

Another, similar psycho drama I find entertaining would be "The Legend of Hell House."

And, as others have mentioned, "The Sixth Sense" is not to be missed either.

When I saw the title of this thread the first movie that poped in my head was "The Thing" and sure enough Warhawk mentioned it in the 4th post. Absolutly the best psychological horror movie. And in the end who is really infected. Personally I think Kurt was. In the director's cut they havea commentary on whether or not one would know he was infected or not. I highly suggest the DC with the commentary.

The Amityville Horror was a standout for me. That house was just creepy.
