Default Cruising trough the Channel in 1940

It is quite possible and very easily.

Returning patrol, I stopped at Bordeaux for refueling.
Then I returned to my base, Wilhelmshaven.
Only one road: the Channel.

Watch it on the pics.

The beginning of the trip is easy to do, while surface and good speed.

It further increases the speed to go to Boulogne

The "S-Boot" protect our trip.

Now, en route to Calais.

We remain very near the coast

En route to Dunkirk, full speed and surfaced yet !

August 40, it's actually the battle for Brittain. Raid over England.

From here to Wilhelmshaven, there is no more problem. We went through !

And we return home three days after leaving Bordeaux.
It was between August 12 and August 15, 1940.

That's all.

GWX 1.03 actually.
Why Jim ?

Edit: note that BdU sent me a message authorizing me to go and affirming that the passage was cleared.
He was.

I was just thinking that it looked a little too easy if you were playing GWX2.1

Broad daylight! Gutsy

I did it too (heading the other way after departing Kiel), but I timed it so the trickiest part was done at night. Had to dive once for some british torpedo boats but no problems otherwise

i ran GWX 2.1 btw. Also after the Bdu message saying it was possible.

I also passed through the Channel a few times in 1940, and Gibraltar in 1941, surfaced, but during the night. I don't think I would do the same in broad daylight.

BTW nice pics.

Thanks Meduza.

Jim, it will be more difficult on 2.1 ?
Are you sure that the English were sunbathing on the French beaches in August 1940 ?
:p

Edit: oh Meduza, I want also try to the Gibraltar passage. But I don't know if I can go trough, stop in a german base and after be affected to a mediteranean Flottilas.
If i start from Wilhelmshaven(or French bases) and ask for mutation, can I go to my new base by de Gibraltar detroit or am i directly positionnd in Mediteranean ???
It will be good if I can receive an order to go in Mediteranean sea, you know what I mean ?

Chisum, you can pass through the Straight of Gibraltar and dock at the German base, but you'll still be assigned to your current flotilla and have to go back through the Straight.
Unless of course, you ask for transfer to Mediterranean flotilla after docking.

Regarding the orders for going through Gibraltar, you'll receive them only if you command the U 96.

Finally I'm into the Mediteranean Sea after cruising trough the Gibraltar Chanel, january 11, 1941 !

No problem except very close about oxygen.

My tactic was cruising deep(-160m) and silent, 1 knt.

I have NOT a mission order to go at La Spezia and it means that I must cruising Gibraltar again to go back in my hometown...

Tell me good luck.

U-123, over.

My latest skipper has just completed a Channel-dash, 27 - 30 July, 1940. Apart from two destroyers SW of Plymouth we saw no other hostiles at all. Passed the Straights of Dover in broad daylight (not bravado - just poor timing) on the surface and then ran like mad for Wilhelmshaven! We even had a Zerstorer escort part of the way.

GWX2.1/SH3 Com/16k Atmos.

Bon Voyage! Good Luck!

Do you have a patrol destination in mind? Would you consider a run to Malta?

Why not ?
But I go at La Spezia at first to refuel and rearm.

It's really sad that I can't be transfered in the Mediteranean Sea after this trip.
I don't know really, but it's maybe possible to stay in the Mediteranean all the war long ??
What will happend when germany will be defeat on this operation theater if I'm in this sea ???

If the sim mirrors history, after May 1943 the whole of North Africa will be 'red', then Sicily after July, and then southern Italy from September. The ports will gradually turn red all the way up the Italian coastline as the war progresses. You will be pushed further and further north and your area of operations will be severley limited.

In RL no U-Boat ever escaped from the Med. back into the Atlantic. That would be a challenge for you! But you will have to pick the right moment to escape.
