Don't you live over there too??!! I bet you can encounter one rather easily!

Actually, I'm now living in eastern Texas, and even when I did live over there, I had never heard about or seen a camel spider before...

That spider picture with the US soliders has been around for awhile. A guy here who had a contract in iraq during the war protecting company personnel said they aren't as big as they look about the size of a mans fist. He was telling us they had to clear out this old building once to set it up as a base the place practically pitch black & full of those spiders and wild dogs. They went in there with shotguns and just shot anything that moved.

On the Wikipedia page it said that these critters could run 10 MPH. OMG imagine seeing a few of them approaching you at 10 MPH <shudder>

One of the Wikipedia pictures shows the jaws of this beast. Crikey, looks like a small bear trap.

I think I can go the rest of my life not seeing one of these critters face to face

He got small ones. From what I gather, they can be 7" and that bigger than my fist I am thinking!

The Tarantula would eat that for breakfast! Now there spiders!
The striped huntsman here in north of South Australia are around 6 1/2 inches, I do have some pictures I could dig up if anyone wants!
I held a coin next to one for a camera shot, the damned thing pounced on the coin & my wife behind me (with the camera) screamed, ofcourse the coin went flying & eventually found it a few years later!

I actually dread those things more that can give you a disease like ticks that can pass Lyme's disease. Or a parasite, like bot flies.

Black Widows are probably the most painful bite you can get from the spider world. Makes your whole body go into convolsions. Kids or elderly are both dead on arrival. Adults don't fair too well either but typically survive.

Just don't play with a Queensland funnel-web spider, only 20 minutes till death! They are as thick as your thumb and have actually bitten through thongs! I think they are the most Venemous spider in the world.
