It seems to me that the screenshots were taken with the graphics settings on Low.

You may also consider that SH4 is a submarine simulation, not a world simulation. And still, there are 120 models of ships and 16 airplanes.

Oh man those Type XVIII pictures look good, i hear we need 30000 renown before she's available, i have 3000 i did have 12000 but spent alot of it on upgrades for my IXD2.

You don't need to have 30000 renown at one time. It's just the sum of youre earnings that should be 30000, so it's no problem that you used them.

It seems an urban legend was born: that you need 30000 ronown to get the Type XVIII.

Is not true, you need to complete 6 successful patrols. Internally, the game uses a "ranking" system to score your performance and based on that it gives the player renown to upgrade "things" on the sub. So spend it anyway you like, just make sure you send those ships to the bottom.
