Doenitz himself forbade any 'gunning' of survivors as it effected the sub crews morale, the same thing could happen to them if they had to abandon their sub. Something similar to the Cold War MAD (mutually assured destruction) syndrome. And Kaleu. Jochen Mohr is just winding you up - ignore his comments on this! !!

I would like lifeboats, I think it would be cool. I mean, it's better than seeing the ship go down and assume that everyone onboard went down with it.

I think that the negetive renown thing would be a good idea.

I tried running over a lifeboat once with me boat. Another time i tried to pick up an enemy sailor in the water but didn't seem to work.
One of the things i like about SH4 is the mission objectives, drop of agents, take recon photos of enemy ports, then at times if you complete one your get another mission which can be many miles away so fuel is a must to monitor. Problem is sometimes your get the same mission over and over bug. I thought patch 1.2 would fix this but i still get it.

I wouldn't mind seeing lifeboats or survivors in the water, as I nearly always linger next to the wreck for fifteen minutes or so to 'aid the survivors' (even though the survivors in SHIII are a couple of wooden boxes )

But of course, there's always the machine-gunning lifeboat people out there who overdose on Quake and Doom fragfests Perhaps the Lifeboats should be made highly explosive? Shoot the lifeboat and sink your uboat?

It's a game people!
I've strafed convoys in IL-2
Bombed civilians and destroyed entire cities!
Detonated atomic weapons in SF sp-1
Laid waist to entire civilizations in RTW!

And yes! I've machinegunned survivors in SHIV.
All this I have done and not lost a single nights sleep.

I'm a pixel killing maniac without remorse or conscience!
Let the player dictate his morals. it's a game! if it makes some of you that uncomfterable, I suggest playing something else.

I mean, Really!...if you cant kill em in the life boat! how can you torpedo and kill hundreds onboard a ship?

That said, I wouldn't mind a reduction in renown for doing it.
As I think it did happen, but...like shooting parachutes was frowned on by many pilots, some pilots saw it as necessity!

That mean you have to integrate them like new ships for example. They will not appear after you have sunk a ship.

I am not convinced adding lifeboats is such a hot idea. It is starting to look as if they will be available one day though, I mean who would have thought one day we could Shift+F2 through an open hatch, but now we can.
What I wonder though is are they worth it? Sure the eye-candy would be nice. But this controversy over their behaviour, puhleeeze.

Forgive me but I don't play SH4, but if I understand correctly the lifeboats in that game can be rescued or destroyed, yes? Now I dunno who or what group decided that but it seems logical.

Ok so we cannot destroy land targets, but they sure can blast away at us. That part of the game I never cared for but its neither here or there because of code, ok.

Any ship, large or small either friendly neutral or not is still a target. I can shoot at another AI VII if I wanted to for example, or a simple fishing boat. H|=ll the luftwaffe does it all the time!

So lets say by way of talent lifeboats enter SH3. Well who's so friggin high and mighty to determine for the rest of us how we should behave to them? Got a heavy chip on the old shoulder? What a load of Hooeey.

Speculation, but I can see if the only way to get them in the game was as if they were debree or a floating lighthouse or some jazz then that is that. Sure doesn't sound like it though. Eye candy is one thing, but adding something to the game then taking away part of it because of personal opionion, how the modder feels, or because someone wants to predetermine behaviour for the players is BS.

If that's the way the tides going to roll then how about I don't want them in the game or the mod that forces them one way only.

Hey now... remember, Mush Morton blasted life boats of troop transports. His take on it was that he wouldn't be doing his job if he had the enemy in his sights and didn't follow thru. He didn't directly shoot at survivors floating in the water, but he didn't leave much doubt as to whether or not they had a chance for survival.

Merchant shipping survivors, yeah I think he let em go.

In the end tho... I'm thinkin they might be more trouble than they're worth.

Honestly, I think the extremely high negative renown would be a more "realistic" take on it. If hospital ships are -10,000, call lifeboats -3,000 or something. Enough to completely invalidate even the best patrol, and on an otherwise crappy patrol, gets you drummed out of the service.
Trouble is most ppl know how to alter that
Most people know how to alter that too, and they will release a "GWX Destructible Life Boats Mod" if life boats are included in GWX. You cant do anything about it. But you can make it realistic by triggering -6000000 renown for a sunken merchant lifeboat or a other value that boots you out of the kriegsmarine and sends you on eternal vacation on the russian front.

I would however fire on warship life boats, and especially on destroyer life boats if they tried to kill me.
