That is a old problem with the auto positioning buttons that was never fixed by the developers in their patches. Just do not use them is the best advice I can give you.

Or save before using them? :P It seems to be specific to something I am doing in the second career though, which is unique in my opinion.

The problem has been around since day 1 of SH3 and on all manner of machines and OS.

Very strange that it only affects me now, however.

I used to always use those buttons for moving crew around, and I never had any problems either.
Then I started reading about CTDs from using them and got spooked and haven't used them since. I don't do a lot of crew rearranging in-game anyway unless I'm ordering the guns manned or assigning people to the repair team, in which case I just double-click the appropriate station to get people there. |

It is an intermittent fault and can come and go without any logic pattern....believe me.

It's those random "bugs" that are the real buzzkills, because you just never know what bizarre, unpredictable combo of factors is going to trigger a problem. Aside from the fact that it will almost always be triggered at the most inconvenient, pull-your-hair-out moment possible. |

Very Dry Boat
I was touring the Eastern Med when war breaks out w/ Soviets. Finished my patrol there, decided to go to Constanza for some Black Sea action (I'm in a type 7b out of Lorient, I was putting in for ammo/fuel at Cadiz, sinking anything that went in or out that end of the strait of Gibraltar. Later went into Med and worked Eastward.) Went up the Bosphorous and slammed into a net, or more accurately over it since I ended up on top of it due to a swell in the sea. Barely survived, repaired, continued to Constanza. Ended patrol. New patrol, sub stuck in dock. Scratched my head, loaded at a point before entering Constanza, went to Warna. Ended patrol. New patrol has my sub on land rolling onto it's side...
SH3 Commander has a start at sea option but checking it seems to make no difference. Maybe I'm just not clear on how the Black Sea operations are supposed to work. I did install the Merged Campaign mod of GWX before starting this new patrol that has me starting on the beach... Was hoping someone could please give me a heads up on what's going on. |

Needs a bit of oil...
Just starting a new career after a few months doing other things, and re-installed from fresh with a standard GWX3 and MFM setup, with just a few eye candy mods (port people, viz mines etc) on top.
Everything seemed to be running fine till I was tracking down a Merchantman in poor visibility (low winds) and decided to duck down for a listen. Hydrophone seemed to indicate that he was breaking up and sinking. So, I closed in to confirm, and low 'n' behold he is chugging along merrily at 6 kts or so and definately not sinking. However, zooming in using free camera, I can hear the creaking but no engine/prop noise! Now, a rustbucket tramp it may have been, but nothing needs THAT much oil, surely.. Joking aside, Im looking to try to repair rather than do the full reinstall on Win 7, so if anyone has come across the sinking sfx being called instead of the usual engine noises anywhere before, I'd greatly appreciate a pointer. Cheers all, Van |

I haven't see that one, but in case you hadn't seen it elsewhere, be sure that when you installed the fresh SHIII you put it in a directory other than one of the "Program FIles" directory. I suggest you use something like:
C:\Games\Ubisoft... It doesn't like to run properly from the default directory, and who knows if that could cause something like you are seeing. Better to be safe, even if you have to reload everything.

Already covered it, stowed away in c:\Games\SH3\..
Thanks for the response though, much apreciated. Only seems to be the merchants, the ASW trawler and his two MTB friends that gave me hell in shallow water last night certainly sounded in fine voice. Van |

Are all Merchants doing this?
Where are you hunting this Merchant? You don't hear some Morse Code do you? |

Hi Privateer.
The incidents have all been up at the top end of the irish sea, in the deep (ish) water channel that runs through the border between AM61 and AM64. However, its first patrol (Oct 2nd 1940) and they were the first encounters, so it may happen elsewhere. I dont recall hearing any Morse, but will load up now and have a listen to the next Medium merchant I find then confirm. Update: Next encounter was a medium convoy in AM61. (Happy days!) I had a quick fly round on the free cam, and the escorts, tankers, aux cruiser and some of the merchants sound fine. Then I got to this one. No engine noise, just the sinking noises instead. Just getting into position on the convoy now and I'll ID it properly, but at first glance its smaller than the previous ship that was having the same issue. Thats the one.
