A stringent new Covid lockdown has come into force in London, parts of east and south-east England and Wales.

Twenty-one million people who entered new restrictions at midnight are being told to stay at home, while non-essential shops and businesses have to close.

The new tier 4 was introduced after a new variant of coronavirus caused cases to soar.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says new tougher rules were needed after scientists said the new virus variant was spreading more rapidly.

Labour's Sir Keir Starmer backs the measures are necessary but criticises the PM for waiting "until the 11th hour to take the decision"

A growing number of countries are stepping up restrictions on British travel.

Extra police officers will be deployed to enforce the new travel restrictions in and out of tier 4 areas.

In the rest of England, Scotland and Wales relaxed indoor mixing rules are cut from five days to Christmas Day only.

A Wales-wide lockdown has been brought forward to Sunday with festive plans cancelled for all but Christmas Day.

The Netherlands has banned all passenger flights from the UK from 06:00 (05:00 GMT) on Sunday until 1 January.

In neighbouring Belgium, flights and train arrivals from Britain will be halted from midnight (23:00 GMT), for at least 24 hours.

Italy's Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio has said on Facebook that the government is about to sign a measure to suspend flights from the UK

Germany's health ministry told AFP news agency that the government was also considering banning flights from the UK

In France, news channel BFMTV reported that the government was "seriously" considering suspending flights and trains from the UK, and the government was "looking for European co-ordination"

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González said Spain also wants a co-ordinated EU decision on the matter.

Austria is also planning a ban on flights from the UK, with details currently being worked out, Austrian media reported.

Outside of Europe, Israel has announced that anyone travelling from the UK must quarantine for two-weeks in a designated hotel facility.

Coronavirus cases in the UK have risen by 35,928 - nearly double the number recorded last Sunday, figures show.

Public Health England medical director Yvonne Doyle said the "sharp" rise in cases was of "serious concern".

It comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned that a new variant of the virus was "getting out of control".

Christmas plans have been scrapped or restricted for millions across the UK amid warnings the variant is up to 70% more transmissible than before.

The number of new UK infections on Sunday is an all-time high for recorded cases and nearly double the 18,447 cases reported a week ago.

Lets not forget that it takes several days after infection for symptoms showing up. I am convinced the new virus strain is already here (Germany).

German family invented the boardgame for the pandemic.

https://www.zerohedge.com/covid-19/u...eyre-too-white

Ahm - okaaayyyy...

My priority list looks different.

1. Nurses and doctors in hospitals, caretaking homes for elder.

2. Elder, police, fire brigades, specialists in key facilities of public infrastructure (powerplants, nuclear facilities, dams, powergrid control centres etc).

3. Young school kids and teenagers (due to their high activity level), shop salesmen in supermarkets and bakeries and the like.

4. The rest in different echelons that can be discussed.

But on the first three groups I have no doubt.

More countries have stepped up restrictions on travel to and from the UK after it reported a more infectious coronavirus variant.

India, Hong Kong, Canada, Switzerland and Germany are the latest to suspend UK flights.

France has closed its border with the UK for 48 hours, with no lorries or ferry passengers able to sail from the port of Dover.

UK PM Boris Johnson will chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee later.

European Union member states are meeting in Brussels to discuss a co-ordinated response on travel bans for Britain.

UK supermarket Sainsbury's says items could be missing from its shelves as a result of the French-UK border closure.

But retailers have played down fears of immediate food shortages.

Globally there have been 77m confirmed cases since the outbreak began, and 1.7m deaths.
