Honestly, I am okay with not having mounted combat. All I want is the horse to have a 'passive mode'. I left him far enough away that he was not going to be attacked, but as soon as the bad guys aggro'd me he was all piss and vinegar. And then he was dead. Last horse I'll ever buy.
Get frost or Shadowmere.... I can tell you right now from my personal in game experience they can both SOLO a dragon, that being said Frost solo defeated an Elder dragon in completely fair one on one combat while I simply spectated.

My current character, the upstanding Harbinger of the Companions and leading citizen of Whiterun would probably not have dealings with the Dark Brotherhood or Black-Briars. However, those horses are indeed excellent options for more shadowy characters. I used Shadowmere extensively on my assassin character.

So I wake up in a lock shack and told the only way out is for someone to die. After taking the key and freeing the rest of the "prisoners", I pay a visit to the local Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. With the help from an Imperial Commander, I breeze past the black door. Unfortunately for those inside, they weren't expecting me. It's funny how many trained assassins would try to run and beg for their lives as soon as the battles started to turn into my favor.

Hopefully this will put an end to all the assassin's that keep ambushing me, and the 3,000 gold reward is nice too.

The night mother can taste my -steel- ebony just like the rest of the brotherhood. They started it when they accepted a contract on me.

It was just as well, clearly you needed to purge the weak. A good assassin is never seen.

Seriously the dark brotherhood missions are probably the best questline in the entire game. Hands down. Ciero is insane.. and the quests are pretty fun... right up to the point you have to put on your chef hat to make a lovely royal dinner!

Agreed. And it was the best questline in Oblivion too.

Thus far I'd say...

1. Dark Brotherhood- its just the best story, best content, overall the best.
2. Thieves Guild - Pretty good, up until the end... I feel like the end was just sort of... out of character.
3. Companions - Its ok... fairly predictable and expected RPG quest line with a cool suprise for you if you want it.
4. College of Winterhold - Horrible, worst questline in the game... just completely boring. literally just beat it to beat it and become Archmage. Story sucked.

Bard College... not sure why they even bothered but ok I did the quest.
Becoming Thane at all the major holds could have been SOOOOO much better but as it is you help the Jarl, then help a few random NPC you get a title and a housecarl woo hoo your a member of a jarls court. not that cool really.

+I didn't want to mention the main story, or the Rebellion because I haven't actually finished those quest lines. All of the Daedric quests have been GREAT so far, but I will say Mehrunes Dagon's was sorta phoned in...the reward is worth it though. I loved Sanquine though... lol great quest. And Mohlag Bohl or however you spell his name.

I'd also agree that the College of Winterhold questline is kind of lame, which is a shame given that the Mages Guild questline in Oblivion was second best only to the Dark Brotherhood. I'd also agree that the Companions is good, albeit predictable, as you had stated. I haven't done the Thieves Guild line yet. Guess I am going to have to roll a thief.

Maybe on second thought I shouldn't have murdered the leader of the Dark Brotherhood then... but seriously, dragging someone off like that. That's just not gonna fly.

*spoilerish*

Just had a chat with a mage at the college: she asked me if I would volunteer as a test subject. First attempt didn't go as planned, so after the spell wore off we gave it another shot. That time it went completely down the drain, but she fixed it after a few attempts.

Me: "Let's not ever speak of this again."
Her: "Agreed."

Gave me a good laugh. Quite like the humorous bits you find now and then.

I love the Jazargo one of the Mage followers... lol.

Whenever you talk to him he says "If anybody tries to sneak up on us I'll smell them. Or maybe not, I guess we will see."

I wished the game world would actually give a hoot about the whole Dragonborn business.

Me: Can I enter the College?

Lady: If you can prove you know magic.

Me: Listen lady, I can summon a dragon on the spot, freeze you in an instant
then burn you and finally blow away whatever remains of you like leafs with my shout.
Do you REALLY want me to cast that fireball to get in?!?!

Lady: Yes.

Or

Me: Hey Jarl, can I buy a house?

Jarl: Sure, after you prove you're a good guy buy helping out, give money to
beggars, help the citizens with their problems and so forth.

Me: Dude, I'm the Dragonborn. You know, the guy that kills dragons like it's nothing,
absorbs their VERY souls and uses them to do fancy stuff. Oh and can I remind
you dear Jarl that I am probably the one who is going to save your city somewhere
along the line?

Jarl: Just do the damn quest or you'll get nothing!

Would be kinda boring, wouldn't it?

But yeah, the people care about as much about the whole "dragonborn" thing as I do. Every time I painstakingly pelt a dragon to death with arrows, I realise "oh right, I can use shouts".
