Yes that was a tragedy. They lost the energy system while diving with heavy flooding. Very bad situation. But as a result the following subs got better systems and were safer.

I've just stumbled across some of my old navy pictures that I never put onto my computer.

USS Brinkley Bass (DD-887) and USCGC Ponchartrain (WHEC-70) being moved together to make way for a guided missile cruiser to tie up next to the tender. May 1970.

I think a better question was what wasn't my job?

I came aboard an ordinary seaman and stood lookout, helmsman, and a few times as broadband sonar operator. After a while I decided I wanted to be a radioman and started working with our ESM equipment primarily and processing message traffic on occasion as well.

OK. Different system as the german navy does. I had to choose my job at the beginning of my military career. Than military basic school (3 month), basic sonar school (3 month), petty officer school (3 month) and at the end the submarine school (4 month - up to 8 month for mechanics and electrians petty officers). After that all, i was allowed to go onboard and see a submarine from inside.

Typically that is a similar path to what most take over here as well. There are a few exceptions like myself who get the opportunity to experience the different jobs first and then decide.

OK. Than the differences between the US and German navy are not as big as i thought.
