Some of the comments in the link you posted Dowly indicate that the story behind the DDOS attack being done by 'fans' is probably true. Some very sad people out there...but enough of that. Update!

The hole must be 2 wide and 3 high (or was it 4), then just use flint and steel to light a fire to the bottom block.

Think it needs to be a bit taller and then you set fire to the bit in the middle.

Annoyingly, I'm on an early tomorrow so I'll have to investigate further tomorrow when I finish work...but I'm into the first night and I have a house with storage, furnace and workbench setup and torches...thank god they're not exhaustible yet!

Tomorrow I shall go exploring.

Lot of fun down under there...but if you die you got to wait on two loading screens

If I'm right you can build down there as well... maybe even make a base

Make a random portal in hell and you can get dropped off anywhere

Edit: sorry bout the triple post right there

Watch out if you make a portal in hell you can end up anywhere, even in caverns with no way out!

Also a quick tip don't fall in the lava it does way more damage than normal in there
