You definitely have a bit more space there than your European colleagues.

Argh, had a 600 mile day planned, made it 10 minutes out of the truck stop, all the lights on the trailer quit. Frustrated!!

Checked fuses, bulbs, plugs...Waiting for the mechanic.

600 miles in a semi?
Don't you have rules for mandatory periods of driving and resting?
Over here a driver isn't allowed to be behind the wheel for more than 9h a day and only twice a week he can go for 10h. No way one can go 600 miles in that time.

I'm assuming these days most reputable trucking companies have fuel/speed regulators installed in their trucks. And I'm sure not all trucks are calibrated using the same equipment either but they are all for the most I think pretty close. Especially when I find myself stuck behind them.

Why in blue blazes does one trucker having maybe a .5 to 2 MPH advantage over another trucker even consider passing the other truck? Only to jam up faster traffic behind him while it lumbers along with a 1 MPH advantage. Its like watching two battling hippos.

Schroeder is correct. The USDOT figures the average speed for a semi to be 40 miles per hour. Anything logged over that speed and they'll think they're within their rights to write you up for speeding or whatever other infraction they deem fit to use in stealing your moolah.

When I was running team, I could put more than 320 miles behind me when running all interstate from start to end of an 8 hour shift but, if I logged more than that, the safety department would flag me for it and bitch a little. I'm certain that repeated infractions would have given them grounds for termination.
Add in pre- trip inspection, breaks and the odd fuel stop here and there and your mileage decreases even more.
The DOT is still lagging behind in regard to the capabilities of modern equipment. Their regs are still languishing in the days of the Rolls-Canhardlies.

You should write a manual and develope a certification program for officers called Jimbuna's guide to better traffic managment. You could make a ton of money like that CALEA program.

Too many inconsiderate drivers on the roads these days to make any change but could be a way of making a quick buck/pound or two.

I know of a mobile mechanic that has a reinforced moose bumper on his service truck (A converted class 8 tractor converted into a box truck) that would do the deed and still look good.
